I think the following would be useful: 1. Run script/app. 2. Output says: point remote at detector and press the [POWER] key. 3. User press power key. 4. script/app outputs: "Detected xxxx-type remote, is this correct?" 5. If user response is "No", try other remotes/keys to narrow down. 6. Once response is "Yes", script/app integrates the remote by autoconfiguring all default settings for various apps. If something like this exists already, apologies! My mind is getting forgetful these days... -brendan |

not trying to flame you, but are you offering to write this? because i see no point in automating this process as opposed to just asking them which remote they have.. however if you want to create a script with your own time thats another mater. |

No, I wasn't offering to write it, so flame away. My understanding is the some of the remotes look very similar...I thought this idea might reduce enduser confusion during install/setup. Just something to consider, not a demand. -brendan |

problem is some remotes use lirc some don't, some use receivers plugged into tvcards some usb etc. you don't even know what driver to load to "listen" for the input, then on top of that many remotes like the hauppage ones are simply subsets of other remotes, so even though in theory this sounds good it would be extremely difficult to implement. |

It is a good idea, unfortunately with the relative lack of standards when it comes to remotes in general, it can't be implemented cleanly. As Xsecrets pointed out, there are at least 5 ways to get a remote hooked up to a pvr. Usb, mystery port on pvr cards, direct serial connection, etc. etc. I kinda wish something like this was feasible. Then again I wish there were 400 channels of HDTV also. ![]() |
