I edited an hour show, loaded the commercial list, edited that so it was perfect, than i hit x, left it for like 16 hours, but i can't tell if anything is happening, i mean i go to delete recording, and the show is the same size. What am i doing wrong?

I have a pvr-250 that records mpeg2, and i set the transcode to go to mpeg4, at least i think i did, there are two transcode options, how do i select which one the transcoding uses?

you don't select which one it uses. If it is a pvr250 it will use mpeg2->mpeg4.

Did "transcoding" pop up after you hit x? Did you type
Code:
ps -ef | grep trans
to see if anything was running?

i also did a ls -lap of my /mnt/hdb1 where my video's are stored, there is a nuv.tmp file that is 1.5gig instead of 2.17 gig, so how come it hasn't changed the tmp to a nuv and switched the files out and deleted the bigger one?

I like top to see if processes are active. Just open a command line and type 'top'. it also a good utility to see how throttled your systems is while you see how much you can load your system down. try transcoding, ripping, and recording/watching tv at the same time.... you'll get a pretty good idea of what you can pull off with the hardware you have.

I know the setting in setup to delete the old file, but the file was never created. It's supposed to create a nuv.old file, but after leaving it for 48 hours alls i got was a nuv.tmp file and no file being inserted into the database.

Check the log file in /var/log/mythtv, there might be a useful hint.
