I'm not sure what's going on here.

I upgraded my system tonight with R5B7 and things went VERY well. However, the system installed the later nvidia driver (7174?) which has a showstopper bug when using an interlaced display. So I used the script /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-6629.sh to install the earlier 6629 version.

Weird things began. (cue "outer limits" theme song) First off, it appears to be ignoring the 6629 driver. When I run nvidia-settings it shows up as having the 7174 (or is it 7178?) version. This is when run on a computer monitor. Even weirder -- if I connect it to my bigscreen it appears to ignore the 1080i modeline. It isn't mentioned anywhere in the log file -- just completely ignored. It's as though its finding some other source for XF86Config-4.

I decided to try the old school approach -- run the shell script from NVIDIA that installs the 6629 driver, since it is right there in the /usr/src directory. It won't compile the modules for the kernel.

The other strange thing is I can't even shutdown my system over ssh anymore! I haven't heard of this problem before -- but it means I have to pull the power to the box when it is hooled to the TV set.

If anyone has ideas on how to force 6629 back onto my system -- or maybe I should go the other way and try whatever is latest? I'm open to suggestions.

I suspect you are already aware of these items, but just in case:

1. When you install the nvidia driver, it will replace your existing /etc/X11/SF86Config-4 file. You'll need to re-install your customized file.

2. I ran into problems trying to install a new version of the nvidia driver when I had bootsplash enabled. The install scripts in /usr/local/bin kept giving me error messages. I disabled bootsplash, rebooted, and then always ran the "install" scripts with gdm halted, and the problems went away.

All of this is my experience with R5A30.2, so I don't know if it will apply to R5B7...

The 7174 driver has a little Dracula in it's blood so that it keeps coming back from the dead (it's set up to reinstall itself when you reboot). There's a thread on new Nvidia drivers around somewhere that tells you how to disable that...

I vaguely remember seeing something about this when I was in a sleep-deprived fog.

I've moved up to the 8178 driver since I couldn't get 6629 to load on my system. It should work as I've been using the earlier 8xxx driver on my box before R5B7.

Still odd about the shutdown thing. I can't get shutdown or reboot to work reliably from the shell. Shutting down from the KM menu works fine, tho.
