Hey all,
After some previous successes with knoppmyth (ran a box for over a month in October) and some glitches (playback freezing when fast forwarding), I decided to wipe clean and try R5B7, the 3/17 release. Here's my installation issue:
The menus and guide are all properly formatted on screen. they are the correct size and shape (so it's not my monitor auto adjust). However, the video is "squished" for lack of a better word, meaning titles and people are flatter than they should be and cut off on the right side of the screen. It's not my aspect ratio - I haven't touched it (though I tested each to debug later). I'm using more or less vanilla settings.
Any ideas?
PVR-150 (silver remote)
Dell 2000FP LCD
Dell 4600/512mb/160gig
Comcast SF.
Note this did not happen with the previous release of knoppmyth.
edit: This seems like an installation related issue, since it's immediately post-install. Hopefully I'm in the right place

You have to tell us your recording profile settings and your playback settings, before we can really help.
Have you tried different resolutions for XFress86? Are you using the same resolution for the frontend and playback?

this is strange I've seen a couple of people posting with this problem, however I have never experienced it, nor did any of the testers ever mention seeing anything like this.
what kind of video card do you have? about the only thing I can think of that pretty much none of the testers use is an ati video card.

Hrm...good point! I'm using mostly defaults (as that's what I used last time).
I'll just pull up the config here....ok.
For Ryan's question:
Using deinterlaced playback (kernel)
Standard MPEG2 decoder
aspect override is off
Commercial autoskip
everything else is pretty much default (or not applicable to the picture)
Oh...recording profile for Live TV is 480x480, Hardward MPEG-2 (default settings again).
---
As for the video card, It's an Intel 845 IGP (those crappy ones they build into the mobo for people who don't do gaming or high end graphics). The feed comes from a PVR-150 (silver remote model).
It's a Dell Dimension 4600 that I saved from the trash heap after the hard disk and power supply died and the previous owner gave it up for lost.
I think it's worth mentioning that the 1-23-2006 release didn't do this, so I know it's at least worked before. Also, the menus (channel guide, channel description) all display correctly. Maybe something in conjunction with move to .19?

Odd...I installed for about the 10th time because I wanted to watch a Nova program tonight. After having the Live TV crap out on me (see the other post someone started about failing to get pginfo), I redid the capture card and some of the other settings. Bam, it worked.
I think the problem pertains to my PVR-150 being detected wrong initially - in the initial setup it claims to have 4 composite inputs and a "Tuner 0". When I redetect it after a reboot, it only has "Tuner" and "Composite 0".
Weird, eh?

that could actually make some sense. I've seen a few posts about people having problems with pvr150's I wonder if there is a new tuner chip, or maybe the version of ivtv in R5B7 just has problems with some of them. Or there could be the possibility that people are trying to record at resolutions that the pvr150's don't support, though I fairly certain that they do support the basic 480x480 and 720x480.

This is called out in both the R5B7 upgrade hints and Cecil's announcement.
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9039
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9069
Because R5B7 moved to ivtv 0.4.3, you need to delete and reconfigure your PVR cards in mythtv-setup after you upgrade, especially PVR-500 and PVR-150 cards. If you PVR-150/500 is setup for "Tuner 0" rather than just "Tuner" then you haven't done this.
There is also a problem with certain PVR-150 cards on a warm boot when their "ID" changes from 8003 to 0003. The R5B7 Hints thread links to another which contains a detailed diagnostic walk through, to let you determine if you have this problem. The cure is to upgrade to ivtv 0.4.4 following the instructions on the CompileIvtv page on the wiki.
Both issues are well documented, with well documented and tested fixes.

odd is it only the pvr150/500 that has tuner and not tuner0? as I actually did delete and recreate my pvr250 and as I recall it was still tuner0.

I think the IVTV folks are trying to avoid confusion with the first and second tuner on those cards. With the PVR-150 "Tuner 1" was just a stub, and with the way the 500 was treated as two cards you were alway supposed to use "Tuner 0", but apparently too many people thought that if "card 0" is using "tuner 0" then "card 1" MUST use "tuner 1"... Why they left the PVR-[23]50s the same isn't clear to me...
