Post subject:  knoppmyth development?

Hi! First let me say that I am a big fan of Knoppmyth. I really appreciate the simplicity with which it has allowed me to set up a fully fuctional mythtv box. I have been following the mythtv-devel list and I have decided that I want to set up a knoppmyth development system on a virtual machine so that I can play with some plug-in code without disrupting my my home entertainment system.

Are there any guides or how-to's regarding how to set up a knoppmyth development box? I am looking for knoppmyth rather than straight linux system with mythtv because knoppmyth is the platform I use.

Thanks

Well, simply by installing KnoppMyth you have a development box. All libs and -dev packages that are needed to compile MythTV are included.

There's lot more information where this came from... Instructions for rebuilding about every component under the sun, from the drivers through the kernel, to the add in applications and libraries. All you've got to do is look. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileMythTVFromSVN

I have setup knoppmyth on a VM using the free VMware player. It wouldn't work with the VM scsi driver but the VM ide driver worked. It works fine running on the VM except playback takes a bit too much. I get about 25-30fps on my dual core 3.0Ghz pentium D with both cores maxed out. Just not quite enough power.

I wasn't sure how much the compiling hints in the wiki might break my existing box, but I will give that a try.

I also did not realize all the dev-libraries and such were installed in a default install, that's great. Thanks for the information.

I had a few bad experiences in the past with installing what I thought were fairly innocuous .debs forcing me to reinstall knoppmyth.

Thanks for the hints on the virtual machine. I guess I will set up two virtual machines, One to hack the code on, and the second with a clean knoppmyth install to replicate my "production" machine for testing.

Thanks again.
