According to the changelog, KM R5B7 is using ivtv 0.4.3.

I found this page, http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware_versions, which reccomends the following firmware versions when using ivtv version 0.3.9 or greater.

Encoder: 0x02050032, md5sum d85cb08382395390dc95ac6ebc2205f9
Decoder: 0x02020023, md5sum 305dba74bbe5905447add8883f3ecb68

Here is what is on my system under /lib/modules.
Code:
root@mythtv:/lib/modules# md5sum ivtv-fw-*
305dba74bbe5905447add8883f3ecb68  ivtv-fw-dec.bin
ab75947ef1b086e26f9b08e628baa02e  ivtv-fw-enc.bin

Since I know how much work went into this Knoppmyth release, I am assuming there is a good reason for not using the latest firmware. Before, I change the firmware on my box and run into some problems that others have seen, can somebody tell my why I shouldn't?

BTW there seems to be some fixes in the works at hauppauge for some of the audio and video problems reported here related to the PVR-150 and PVR-500. http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_pvr150.html
Look at the fixes listed under the Beta drivers.

I'm confused. Should the firmware be in /lib/modules or somewhere else?

Mike, it DOES use the recommended firmware. There are two versions of the encoder file one with some null padding and one without. This means that they have different MD5SUMs even though both are the same version. Do this and then compare the results:
Code:
root@black2:~# md5sum /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/v4l-*
305dba74bbe5905447add8883f3ecb68  /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/v4l-cx2341x-dec.fw
5f5fa240ada73c3565f5f7de4c7b5138  /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/v4l-cx2341x-enc.fw
0661f8b2693fe3123e6234557353eacc  /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/v4l-cx2341x-init.mpg
3a4803384f749d644ee1f1ca9dcb12fa  /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/v4l-cx25840.fw

You'll note that the encoder is the one from pvr_2.0.24.23035.zip as described at the bottom of this page: http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware

If what you have differs from this there is either something wrong with your install or you're talking about an old version.

OK, that makes more sense. I knew that would not have been missed. From what I am reading, the firmware for ivtv used to be in /lib/modules or linked from /lib/modules to it's real location. Now they are stored in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware.

Is there any use for the files that are still in /lib/modules?

I also downloaded the beta drivers from hauppauge. The encoder firmware is the same, the audio firmware is the only one that is updated.
