I've seen people complain of issues in the past, so I just want to ask.

I want avoid possible problems by ordering one of these:

Will it work (Tier-1) when I upgrade from R5A30.2 to R5B7?

Experiences anyone?

Might be a Tier 2. When I reconfigured/recompiled LIRC once, there was an option for what type of receiver. One of those was for a "homebrew receiver".

I built this exact same thing using a DB9 connector, one resistor and a IR transmitter from an old Dish Network setop box. The IR transmitter from the Digital sat box connected to the Dish Setop box via a DIN and was used to turn on a VCR to start recording.

Anyway, back on topic: If Lirc in R5B7 supports serial port IR blaster then Yes it will work, you'll just need to tell Lirc what port to use and what Config file to use to change the channels with. If Lirc in R5B7 does not play nice with it then you could always install Lirc from source and create a second instance of Lirc (especially if you are already using the one that came with Knoppmyth to control MythTv with a remote) usig this guide: http://losdos.dyndns.org:8080/public/my ... _LIRC.html

I have R4V5 running with the original instance of Lirc being used to control Myth with a remote and I built a second instance of Lirc (using the guide above) to control my cable box.

I'm interested in a HomeBrew ir-receiver, not transmitter.

So, my question is about how well that "original instance of Lirc" auto detects an ir-receiver if it is plugged in at the time of R5B7 AutoUpgrade.

Experience anyone?

I tried to have a blaster and a homebrew receiver on the same serial port recently, and it all just worked through the blaster instance of lirc, so rather then setting it up as a receiver, you could just say that you have an irblaster. Having said that, the irblaster support is very new and has some problems. This is being worked on.

Sorry, looked at the picture real quick and it looked like the transmitter I had built.

I'm not sure how the Lirc instance is setup in R5 but it R4V5 I was able to run the config script for Lirc and tell it what port to monitor (i set mine to monitor the PVR350 IR interface). I am sure that it could be done the same way in R5, just run the script for lirc and tell it what port to watch.
