G'day all,

If this does not belong here, please move it.

I have a pvr350 in my FE/BE, the only function it is performing now is lirc, it will record OTA but my 3 DVB-S cards are better and have priority.

I was thinking of getting rid of it, but I need something else for my remote control.
I only have one serial port and it is use my the old wireless mouse I have (one of those KB's with a toggle/pointer on the top right.)

I don't really want to add another serial card.
I have not tried a usb to serial adapter for the KB, that might free up the serial port.

What do people suggest as a solution?

Hi,

I use a usb keyboard that I got from Cyberguys Nothing fancy, small keyboard with a joystick type of mouse positioner and two buttons on left end. Was only about 30 bucks but worked so well I bought and extra one :) I think the model is an ION but will check tonight if interested.

That would free up the com port for a serial receiver.

Or the re is a usb ir receiver for about the same cost.

I do NOT recommend using iguanaworks usb device.

I repeat NOT recommend.

I bought one and had issues with it. They did not officially support
Knoppmyth at that time although they may by now. I got some response
from their email initially, but when I discovered that they had just
completely changed their usb device (probably because of problems)
and it became clear that I needed the new device, they quit responding
to my emails.

Although I have used several iguanaworks serial devices with success
I will never buy another, and I recommend against anyone buying
from them.

I'm not a Linux noob. The device drivers were installed and talked, but
they got a lot of random noise (spurious channel changes, needing to
press the remote key 5 or 10 times to get it to take one press...

Cliff

This looks like the one that Mike was describing:

I use the Streamzap remote that is $30 US. It came with it's own USB receiver.

Hi,
novellahub, you are good :) That is it exactly.

Also the usb ir receiver I use came with the hauppauge 150 mce (low profile for sfff cpu) and works very well. I came with the RC6 remote, has big UGLY button in the middle but if I close my eyes I don't see it. I think Hauppague sell just the receiver for a bout 30 bucks also and will work with the A415 remote.

I've had really good luck with a couple old ATI Remote Wonders that I got off ebay. They're USB and are configurable using the setup script. They're also RF so I can leave my ugly PC behind the closed entertainment center doors and you can configure them to have different identifiers so they done interfere with each other. (I have one for my main BE/FE in the living room and one for the FE in my bedroom.) They'll typically sell for around $15 incl. shipping.
