I had a flawless upgrade from R5C7. Many thanks and congratulations to everyone who creates and helps Knoppmyth on producing such a quality release.

# Video type: SDTV
# Type of system: combined front- and back-end
# Noise level: I can barely hear it from 5 feet away

# CASE: Antec 3000B, 120mm case fan on low speed
# PSU: Dell, from Dell 2350, fan swapped for Panaflo low speed
# MOTHERBOARD: MSI 661FM2-LSR 661FX 478 (not recommended)
# CPU: Celeron Northwood 2.2GHz
# RAM: 512 MB
# CPU HEATSINK: Zalman 7000 AlCu
# NORTHBRIDGE HEATSINK: mobo standard, passive
# CD/DVD-RW: Old Panasonic DVD-ROM, IDE
# HDD: 2x 160GB Samsung (not LVM), suspended by bungee
# GRAPHICS CARD: integrated for install, PVR350 TV-out for use
# SOUNDCARD: None (PVR350)
# TUNER CARD: PVR350, using TV-out
# REMOTE CONTROL: Hauppauge gray remote with PVR350

My system used to be Tier 2, reported here, but the motherboard and case is changed, so it's no longer a Dell machine; so now it's Tier 1 and here's a new report.

The only extra install activity required was based on instructions in R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards: I dropped and re-created the card definitions. I saw other mentions of problems with PVR-350 TV-out in other posts, so was a bit nervous, but it was completely flawless. My only problem was not remembering whether my remote was gray or silver, and guessing wrong first time.

I made the upgrade because my old install was unstable (hanging for long periods, stuttering...). This may have been due to many things, but so far the new install has been very good. If it isn't then I'll start buying hardware and get a nice dual core setup in prep for HDTV... I have a Mobo with an SiS chipset, which isn't a good idea with the PVR-350. Before upgrade, I swapped the 350 to another slot, which may or may not help.

R5E50 seems to be very close to standard Debian, which is great - I installed the latest Slimserver through apt-get with no hassle at all (I updated the KnoppMythWiki).

Shortly, I'll try to install VMWare again, and the machine can once again host a virtual machine running my mail and web server. Through the wonders of virtualization, I simply copied its image onto my desktop machine, which is hosting the web/mail server until I put it back onto the Knoppmyth machine. Slick.

Could you fill in the template with the rest of your hardware details from the topic sticky posting? http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10955

Thanks...

Apologies, I've now edited the first post as requested.

VMWare install hasn't been as easy as I'd anticipated - it claims it can't see the headers, even though it looks to me like they're there... I'll have to look into it further shortly.

(tjc, I'm in the next town over - Somerville)
