If you put in "720x576", in the appropriate mode, it does actually select it, so the screen does appear to be 720x576, but in a 800x600 virtual screen, so you can scroll the screen around.
From the old Xorg.log:
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "720x576"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "640x480"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 800 x 600

and
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "720x576"
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX

So after a quick google, I end up with the following:
Code:
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     24
                Modes "720x576" "800x600" "640x480"
                Virtual 720 576
        EndSubSection

Which sets the virtual screen to 720x576, so:
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "720x576"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "640x480"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size configured to be 720 x 576
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode "800x600" is larger than virtual size 720 x 576;
(WW) NVIDIA(0):     discarding mode

and
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "720x576"

I wish I had found out about this earlier. :)

So in summary, for nVidia TV out, you do not need to set a modeline as long as your other TV out settings are correct, you just place the required mode setting in the "Modes" line and add the required virtual screen size.

well.. your modeline worked a treat. the log file tells me its running in 720x576 resolution. the other two you listed didnt work for me and the card just set itself to the autodetect.

the picture is slightly hazy. but that may well be due to the $5 svideo to composite adapter.

i have better video cards, but theyre pci-e cards. i might get excited and plug my dragon into the SD tv. its a gigabyte card and came with a nicer adapter that i does component.

edit.. its nighttime.. but i'll certainly try bruces post
