Post subject:  Shuttle ST62KS "Zen" and PVR-350

Did an auto install of R5A16 and everything "just worked" with the on-board ATI 9100 as the output device (I was using the VGA output, I didn't try the S-Video output).

To switch to the PVR-350 as the output device, I followed the instructions at
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4557
and again, everything "just worked".

The PVR-350 I used was a US version that was a couple years old, and the default driver settings (tuner etc.) were correct.

The one catch is physically getting the PVR-350 board into the Shuttle box. The problem is that the FM antenna connector hits the case and prevents the board from going in. Here's the trick:
  1. Remove the bracket from the PVR-350 board. It's held on by two small machine screws.
  2. Place the bracket in the Shuttle box in the "final postion".
  3. Hold the PVR-350 card above the PCI connector and slightly forward.
  4. Move the brack up until it aligns vertically with the board.
  5. Move the board rearwards into the bracket.
  6. Push the board down into the PCI connector (the bracket will move down as well).
  7. Reattach the board to the bracket by replacing the two machine screws removed in step 1.

Update: this box is now running R5F27 with no problems.

I've switched from using the PVR-350 tv-out to using the
on-board ATI 9100 IGP video chipset. I have added an HDHomerun
ATSC tuner and was having to transcode even SD recordings for
playback on the '350. The transcoding was causing audio sync
problems on some recordings (only from one station, oddly).

Using the on-board video chipset with the internal player
avoids the need to transcode SD recordings. HD recordings still
have to be transcoded to 480i, but I haven't noticed any audio
sync problems.

The on-board ATI 9100 IGP is no longer supported by the fglrx
driver, but the Xorg driver manages ATSC SD playback at 20-30%
CPU usage, so it's good enough for now. I'm currently using
the VGA output and a scan-converter to drive an S-Video TV input.

With the motherboard S-Video TV-out, the TV couldn't sync with
the default 640x480 timings. I didn't spend any time trying to
get that to work since I had a scan-converter sitting in a
drawer.

Playback of 720p ATSC recordings stutters badly, but "works"
for at least as long as I've been willing to watch it. With
1080i it can't manage any video at all. No surprise there.

Next up: replace the PVR-350 with an NVidia 6200 PCI video card
and see if it will do HD playback...
