So I finally got a new box to upgrade from the 500MHz machine with 192 megs of RAM that was running R5D1. I basically moved all the components -- hard drive, DVD-R, CD-RW, PVR-150, sound card, network card, FX5200 vid card. When it booted up, I guess since all the components were the same it had no problem loading. I had already done a backup, so I immediately did the auto-upgrade to R5E50.

I ran into a bunch of problems, but nothing really serious. I couldn't get the PVR-150 remote (silver one) to work until I changed /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and changed DEVICE="/dev/lirc" to "/dev/lirc0"

I've been fighting with the small text on the menus -- with R5D1 I had it enforce 75 dpi fonts (found the tip on here somewhere) with DisplaySize 271 203 in XF86Config, but that doesn't seem to do anything in xorg.conf in R5E11. I'm still messing with that.

My biggest problem, though, is audio. It's stuttering, but not just when the OSD is goes away, as I've seen some people had problems with on here. It's when playing any video -- it starts fine for a second or two and then, when I'm assuming the buffer fills, it starts the stuttering ... well, not so much stuttering as a high-pitched noise that goes with the sound. DMA on the drive is enabled, and the card worked fine for the few minutes I had it on R5D1 before I upgraded.

Any ideas?

I'm appreciating KnoppMyth a lot more now that it's on a machine that can really handle it -- the previous machine was nothing more than a fancy VCR, but this is working quite well ... except for the sound!

Thanks in advance for the help,
Anthony

Ah, I think I found it:
Code:
root@mythtv:/etc/X11# cat /proc/interrupts
           CPU0
  0:   34390812          XT-PIC  timer
  1:       3136          XT-PIC  i8042
  2:          0          XT-PIC  cascade
  3:    2164232          XT-PIC  eth0, nvidia
  6:          5          XT-PIC  floppy
  7:         13          XT-PIC  parport0
  8:          1          XT-PIC  rtc
  9:          0          XT-PIC  uhci_hcd:usb2
 10:      76260          XT-PIC  ivtv0
 11:      42176          XT-PIC  uhci_hcd:usb1, Ensoniq AudioPCI
 14:     192360          XT-PIC  ide0
 15:    4200107          XT-PIC  ide1
NMI:          0
LOC:          0
ERR:          0
MIS:          0

So it looks like the audio card and the USB are on the same interrupt, as well as the ethernet card and the video card! I tried changing this in the BIOS, but whenever I change the sound card it automatically changes the usb1 (or the eth/video) ... hm. I'm gonna see if I can find out how to change this some other way ...

And just a note -- I've tried just about everything I could find in every thread on here that mentioned crackly audio, stuttering audio, garbled audio, broken audio, etc. I've changed the volumes, the bitrates, etc. and nothing works.

Now, my understanding of IRQs from years ago is that it's okay for multiple devices to share an IRQ, but that sometimes they conflict. If I remember right, changing the PCI slot should change the IRQ, so I'll try that now.

:)

DisplaySize no longer works. Use these options instead.
Code:
        Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE"
        Option "DPI" "100 x 100"

Excellent! Thank you.

Unfortunately, the audio is still stuttering ... I've even tried swapping it out with a newer card, and still no luck. It's not affecting the recordings, thank goodness.

Any ideas? Is there a way to adjust the sound buffer?

You can try the "Use aggressive sound card buffering" option somewhere under TV settings...

Tried that, and still no luck.

I guess I could always go back to R5D1, since it seemed to work fine on there. I'm going to keep tinkering before I make that decision, though. :)

Thanks for the help,
Anthony
