The onboard audio on my ECS G33T-M2 motherboard worked but was very very quiet and I had to crank the TV volume up to 50+ where as normal TV/PS3/Wii only needs a level of 15-20. I did a tad bit of searching online and found some decent reviews for the Asus Xonar DX 7.1 working under ubuntu. I purchased the card From Central Computer for the same price newegg charges( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6829132006 - $89+tax ). Instructions for compiling Alsa drivers are here. NOTE: KnoppMyth/LinHES uses udev so you don't need to run `./snddevices`. I disabled the onboard HDA sound in the BIOS, rebooted and first tried compiling the alsa-driver/lib/utils version 1.0.19 which gave lots of errors in dmesg when running `modprobe snd_virtuoso`. Audio out simply did not work at all with the 1.0.19 driver. I decided to try one rev back which happened to be the first rev that this card is supported ( v1.0.18 ). This did the trick and sound works perfectly now, at least to my TV built in speakers from the 'Front Jack' port on the card. To be exact, I compiled the sources from alsa-driver-1.0.18a.tar.bz2, alsa-lib-1.0.18.tar.bz2, and alsa-utils-1.0.18.tar.bz2. Just to be tidy, I ran `apt-get remove alsa-base alsa-oss alsa-utils alsaplayer-alsa`, then re-installed the driver, libs, and utils. rebooted and all is good. |

I recently added an ASUS 8400GS 512MB card to play with VDPAU. After updating the nvidia drivers I have video but now my sound is broken. sucky. |

turns out the audio-in on my TV broke. Samsung field tech coming to fix it Tuesday. I upgraded to R6 which went smooth and pain free. Audio worked "out of the box". |
