It should probably be posted here now as I managed to solve the problem myself.
Basically I run the Avertv dvb-t 771 by updating the kernel and loading the related modules.
See here:

The avertv dvb-t 771 with 5A15.1 becomes almost a tier 1.
You just need to follow the indication given in the announcement (http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4374) regarding the pcHDTV 2000 and the 771 works!!!
Many thanks for this great release!

Luca

Ah...

A slight amendment to Cecils post =>

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4374

To set up your AverMedia 771 DVB-T card (and maybe others), when mythtv-setup starts, to switch to a console screen with <CTRL><ALT><F1> , log in as root, and type -

modprobe dvb-bt8xx
echo dvb-bt8xx >> /etc/modules

Now <ALT><7> back to the mythtv-setup screen and your DVB card should be visible

PS. The slight amend was the 8 in the bt8xx, the btxx just gives me a fatal error...

I've read everything I could possible find on the Aver 771 card. With 5A15.1, it sees the card in mythtv-setup.

When I scan for channels, I specifically put in the frequencies and 7MHz for bandwidth (being in Australia).

From here it gets a lock, and then loses it. Is this normal?

At the very end, after waiting for it to finish, there are no additional channels in the 'Add Channel' area. From everything I have read, it seems like channels should appear there after scanning? Is this true? The transports are added, but there are no additional channels. I suppose what I am after is someone to confirm if channels are meant to appear at the end of the scanning process. If so, what are some possible reasons they wouldn't?

Any hints would be much appreciated.

Further to my previous post...

I am doing a scan for the existing transport:

739500000 Hz (0) (4115) (2400)

which should be Seven at Mt Lofty UHF 58.

It simply says:

Processing new Transport
Finished processing Transport

I click Finish and am brought back to the empty channels screen.

In the 'Transport Editor' screen here are a couple of the entries. There are 10 entries in total.

739500000 Hz (0) (4115) (2400)
571500000 Hz (0) (12802) (768)
....

In the edit screen for the first transport listed immediately above, the following is shown:

Standard: DVB
Frequency: 739500000
Bandwidth: 7 MHz
....sion: Auto (first letters cut off by plasma)
Consellation: QAM 64
LP Coderate: 1/2
HP Coderate 2/3
Trans. Mode: 8k
Guard Interval: 1/8
Hierarchy: None

After hearing how easy this should be, I'm pulling my hair out!

The only other thing is that the signal strength is often quite low... sometimes as low as 5%. I have installed the card under Windows and all the channels are scanned and appear to be fine. I also have an LG LST4100 STB that all the channels work fine. I have obtained the frequencies from www.dba.org.au and they are the same ones automatically used by the STB and under Windows.

Would a weak signal strength cause the channels not be be added? Is there any reason the signal strength would be weak under MythTV, but under Windows or on a STB?

Any thoughts at all would be helpful, even if it's just a shot in the dark, as I'm pretty much out of ideas.

Where abouts in Adelaide are you? I am in Wattle Park (foothills) so I receive UHF from the Santos building (I think). The dba website had the wrong freq for channel 2. I had to get the correct freq from the abc web site.

Sorry, didn't include that! We're up in Toowoomba.

It seems like the signal strength is consistently under 10% on all the channels, although it doesn't appear to be the card as it works under Windows. Is this possible??

I just tried a scan specically for the transport:

739500000 Hz (0) (4115) (2400)

The result is:

Transport ID 2400
Failed to tune
Transport ID 2064
Failed to tune
Transport ID 768
Failed to tune
Transport ID 784
Failed to tune
Transport ID 800
Processing new Transport
Finsihed processing Transport

No channels added.

Mt. Lofty is the location of the transmitter in Adelaide. I didn't realise that there was another Mt Lofty in Australia that also had TV transmitters on it!

ABC Digital for my location:

From the ABC Website:
781.625 MHz Channel 64

From dba.org.au:
UHF 64 781.5 MHz

I know the ABC site is correct, so dont always trust dba.org.au

Going to get the AverTV DVB-T 771 myself too (what's the difference to the DVB-T without 771?). And I also need to know how to get the remote to work, 'cause from whatever I've read around the forums, it's not plug-and-click by any means...

They are 2 totally different cards. The 771 has a better tuner but was unsupported in kernel until 2.6.10 came out. The DVB-T was supported in earlier versions; I don't know now.

I can't help for the remote.

Ok, good thing I got the 771-version then. Ordered today, hopefully here in a week. Hope people have got the remote to work as well, so I won't have to configure it all by myself...

Now then, anyone tried this card with MediaPortal? Yes, I know it's OT and it's on Windows and it's on the dark-side, but does it work, and work as well as in MythTV? I guess the graphics-drivers for ATI-cards are somewhat more functional there...

PS. Do I NEED to have hardware-decoding on my graphics card to watch MPEG-2? I have the Geforce2MX and AFAIK it doesn't have it.

AFAIK, no way for Mediaportal; it needs BDA driver and the 771 is unlikely to get those.

I use knoppmyth with a 771 and a Geforce 2MX with an athlon Xp1900+ underclocked by 25% with no decompression trouble. (no HDTV in italy, for now)
OnlyTV-out quality could be better imho.

My two cents: ff you want to use windows, choose another card; the software is ugly and it doesn't support third party applications.

In Linux it works very fine, though.

Are you using nvtv to enable your tv out on the Geforce 2MX? I also have a GeForce2 MX400 and my TV out is great (after quite a bit of tinkering). It's especially important to use Bob deinterlacing and to chose a vertical resolution that matches your tv standard (480 lines for NTSC-NeverTheSameColour and 576 lines for PAL-PerfectionAtLast) then if you set the Flicker filter to as low as you can stand in the menus (I use 0 and just put up with flicker in the menus, but it may be worse for NTSC) you should get pretty good tv out quality for video playback. The other thing that is useful is to set the overscan just right for your tv. There is a writeup on the wiki about how I did this (although it is a bit involved).
