One thing that REALLY FRUSTRATES me with the forum software is that there is only ONE chance to get to the posts made since you logged on last. If, for any reason, you LOSE that list after you retrieve it, IT'S GONE FOREVER. You can never find the posts again. You can't search for "posts made in the last 24 hours" or any other time-based search.

Take this evening, for instance. I logged into the forum and clicked the "posts since last visit" link. Then the browser crashed. Quick, I opened the browser and went straight back to the forum. Too late! The forum now says I logged on two minutes ago, and the list is CLEARED.

ARRRRRRRGHHHH!!!!!

Pardon me while I go bash my head against the desk some more.

If the browser had crashed 24 hours ago, you'd have this problem. ;)

I agree that this is IMO the biggest hole in this forum.

Yup, that sucks. There's a long list of things that suck about
web-based forums in general an PHPBB in particular. I'd much
prefer a newsgroup (or a mailing list carried by gmane.org),
but apparently web-forums are a pox that's here to stay.

There is a mod for phpBB2 for exactly what you're looking for. I have it on a forum that I run. It goes in steps from 5 mins to 6 months. I don't remember what it's called, but it wasn't a simple patch, I had to go in and change php code :(

If I find the name of it I will drop it in here.

The problem with lots of mods, in my experience, is that they present a barrier to updating. phpBB comes out with some security fix, and you don't dare update, for fear of having to re-apply your mods, which usually involve hand-editing. In the long run, it isn't worth it.
But maybe phpBB3 is better? I'm hoping to move my board to phpBB3 in a few months.

You hit the nail on the head and drove it thru the 4x4 w/ one stroke.

It's not worth risking any stability. I'm over my whining and crying fit. Just one of those things. Yes, we all hate PHPBB but it's the easiest thing to get going and maintain.

Now that most of the forum is indexable to search engines, maybe there's some way to accomplish what you want using a Google API of some sort?
