I am using R5.5 and experiencing video out (VGA) issues:

1) video frame is shifted 1 inch to the left
2) live tv \ playback video frame refresh rate ~ 1 hertz

The Hauppauge PVR is decoding and recording cable TV so, I believe the problem to be with the video. Attempts to playback video recordings on other machines are successful, whereas attempts to play on the mythserver suffer from a 1 hertz refresh rate.

That being said I would like to determine if the right driver is being used. This would require:

1) knowing which driver is associated with this integratred graphics card
2) a litmus test (similar to ethtool to diagnose an ethernet driver)
3) a procedure to pin the right driver to the X4500HD

My search did not turn up anything useful: any guidance or experience is appreciated. Thank you.

R5.5 or R6? R6 is newer and contains newer drivers for sure. I would recommend that you switch to it and see if that helps. As to the Intel drivers for the on board chip, I have disabled mine and am using an nvidia 6200 for it's s-video out so I can't help you there.

I am using R5.5. As far as I can see this is the last major issue with the system. Attempts to install R6 resulted in System nonresponsive to Keyboard after install and reboot.

I view this as a learning opportunity (much like the LAN driver issue resolved \ posted yesterday. If this is a driver issue I would like to learn how to resolve this and then consider moving to R6.

I am hoping to find the video driver equivalent of 'ethtool -i' today via Google or maybe one of the senior ninjas will provide guidance.

My experience would tell me not to use the integrated graphics. I would (and do) disable Intel graphics chipsets and buy a cheap nvidia 8400GS PCIE.

How have you actually been searching for information? I don't want to make any assumptions about your level of expertise, so if you could provide a little information as to what you have done so far it would be helpful.

Agreed: I have a JATON, VIDEO-338PCI-TV NVIDIA GEFORCE PCI 6200/256MB to play SD TV through S-Video. That being said, the motherboard has an HDMI port, which I woud like to use with a LCD \ Plasma panel.

I am not a unix ninja (yet), however, I would like to think that I am a voracious learner. That being said, I am searching for a command that will enable determination of the current driver (maybe its in a .conf file?). I am trying various keyword searches in google.com/linux as well as the Forum Search mechanism. I view this as an opportunity to learn something new :)

I searched using X4500HD as a keyword and it seems that I may need to compile \ make the drivers. After googling, this first article led to a second article and then to a third. I am thinking of using the drivers from the third article. The third articles does mention the G45 Chipset and the HDMI port. Not really sure if this is the right source to compile for the GMA X4500HD. It would be great if someone that has done this would weigh in.

My searches will eventually get me there, however, any constructive experience or pointers to articles would be appreciated.

Your X log file will tell you what driver you're using. Become root and then do:
Code:
more /var/log/Xorg.0.log

OBTW - According to you xorg.conf you're using the VESA driver.

OK, now we know you're not that familiar with x configuration, I'm less likely to insult you by pointing you to http://intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html
According to the documentation I Googled, there are two drivers that should work for this: The ones developed by the intellinux site (as per URL above) and the VESA. Obviously the VESA driver isn't working for you, so if I were you, I'd persist (that HDMI out would be a good thing to get working) and try the appropriate driver. You may well have to compile source code (OK, you definitely will ;-) ) and that ...

Right. Forget all that. Look at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1057866&page=9, which is totally about your mobo. Although FC isn't debian based, you should be able to get it going as well as the poster (Corinco). Don't update to the latest BIOS, as it is generally agreed to screw up all OSes, including Windows.

Good luck, but there's hope yet :-)

Mike

Thanks tjc, manicmike and graysky. Your comments are super helpful.

I ran the lspci command and found that a large number of unkown Intel devices (see output below). I suspect that the second line is HDMI video driver. Not sure if the designation "unknown device" is problematic, however, the Jatron NVIDIA Video card, which does not have the "unknown device" designation, functions well.

I need to decide whether to just compile the 2D driver or the 'whole
stack'. Maybe start with 2D driver first and see how its installation changes the output of lscpci.

According the Intel Linux Graphics Driver Installation Guide, this list is needed to build the driver:
1) kernel module agpgart and drm; The source of kernel modules is included in Linux kernel.
2) libdrm;Libdrm is included in freedesktop drm source.
3) Xorg 2D driver: xf86-video-intel;
4) Mesa and 3D driver;

Here is KM R5.5 Kernal info:
Code:
root@mythtv:/home# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.23-chw-4 (root@mbe.mysettopbox.tv) (gcc version 4.2.3 20071123 (prerelease) (Debian 4.2.2-4)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon May 26 14:44:56 PDT 2008

I think that KM R5.5 provides line item 1), but I am not sure what command would verifiy this. As for 2) I have no idea if it is included in KM R5.5: would be nice if there was a test (command) that could be performed to determine presence \ absence. How can I test for items 1&2?

Saga update: upgraded system to LinHES 6.02.
Code:
[root@mythtv rc.d]# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.28-LinHES (root@dev) (gcc version 4.3.3 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Nov 1 06:47:02 UTC 2009

So I checked the pci devices with the lspci command to determine if 6.02 recognized the native VGA controller:

Code:
root@mythtv rc.d]#date
Sun Jun 13 12:38:07 EDT 2010

[root@mythtv rc.d]# lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 [b]VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)[/b]
04:01.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)
[root@mythtv rc.d]# lspci | grep -i unknown
[root@mythtv rc.d]# lspci | grep -i unknown
[root@mythtv rc.d]#

If we compare the address 00:02.0 to the results of my Jan 25 posting we see that it is no longer of unknown status:

Code:
root@mythtv:date
Mon Jan 25 18:38:07 EDT 2010
root@mythtv:lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Unknown device 2e22 (rev 03)
04:01.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)

Furthermore, there are no longer any 'unknown' lspci devices:

Quote:
[root@mythtv rc.d]# date
Sun Jun 13 12:48:27 EDT 2010
[root@mythtv rc.d]# lspci | grep -i unknown
[root@mythtv rc.d]#

That being said, it now makes sense to test the native video output. It is a hassle to physically remove the Jaton Video card: it would be cool if it there was a process that allowed electronic (BIOS setting or command line) control to enable \ disable the Jaton Video card (simulating removal \ additionof the card). Any suggestions on this process would be appreciated.

Kudos to Cecil and company for including these drivers.

When I gain access to an HD TV and a HDMI cable I will post the results.
