I am seriously considering using a USB flash drive to install LH. An 8GB drive is now < $10. I would like to use the flash drive in conjunction with a traditional HDD (to store media), with the hope that when I can treat the OS \ LH as a part (flash drive) and the content as a second physical part (traditional HDD).

There are certain obstacles \ hurdles that would be associated with using a flash drive (limited write cycles). Has anyone had success with this exercise? Any lessons learned \ landmines to avoid would be apprecaited. Thank you.

Don't waste the time/effort.

1) Flash is horribly slow
2) root partition is small

Ok, so I wont' waste the effort. That being said, I need to choose an 2TB or better HDD. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please include whether you are using the model and reasons why you are happy with it.

in answer to your first question as long as the swap partition is on the spinning drive you shouldn't have a problem with the multiple writes thing.
To your second question the WD Green drives are pretty good but they use the new sector sizes that will become normal. Here is an old post about them I'm not sure if 7.2 has fixed any of these problems automatically viewtopic.php?f=21&t=21242

The sector size thing should be fixed in R7.2
About using a flash drive, yes I ran a system like that for a while. Overall it was OK but using a real HDD is a better route.
The main annoyance was sometimes the boot order would reset itself, obviously thats MB dependent but very annoying.

I'm in the process of upgrading to 7.3 from 6.3 I have 7.3 installed on a seperate drive. It's a 20 GB drive made in 2000 and mythtv is running fast enough. I plan on moving the partition to a more modern drive but this is for SAF so that the system isn't down. for more than a day.
