I am using a PVR500 in my system.
That worked fine with LinHES 6.
I just installed 8.1.1 on the machine, and while it detects the PVR500, and setup seems to be ok, it does not lock onto any channel.
I'm not sure if this is an issue with LinHES or with the MythTV version that's in 8.1.
dmesg shows:

Update: I got it working, with two changes: I disabled Closed captioning, and I am using the S-Video output of my set-top box, connecting to the S-Video input of the PVR-500.
Disabling Closed captioning resulted in getting a lock on the channel, but I still had noise when I selected "Watch TV." With S-Video, I get the actual channel.
The coax cable is ok, it works when connecting directly to the TV. Using the S-Video input is fine for me as well, of course.

Update 2:
I think I found the main problem:
I have a Perl script to change channels through a serial port connection to the settop box, directv.pl (I am using a serial-to-usb cable to connect to the USB port at the settop box.)
That works fine when I call it from the command line, but from MythTV, the permissions of /dev/ttyS0 seem to be wrong.
I had to allow world to rw: chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0.
If the script fails, MythTV apparently reports the "No lock" error.
This post helped: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1417532
of course, a reboot reset the setting on /dev/ttyS0. Ii guess I need to modify some udev setting...

A udev rule may be more complex then needed.
If /dev/ttyS0 is setup for rw by a group I would add the mythtv user to the group.

Well, it turns out to be a one-liner in udev:
KERNEL=="ttyS[0-9]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0666"
