When I check my LinHES backup/systembackups I see:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root       4096 Mar  9  2019 errored_backups

Several times I have deleted these directories (that I assume had come from backup jobs that faltered) and the next time I check they're back. How do I get rid of these directories once and for all? I do a secondary backup of LinHES and these directories, which do contain many files, are taking up time, space, and bandwidth. Most are too old to be of use.

Is there anything in errored_backups that lines up with the dir names?

No. There were 3 tar.gz files in the error dir that had different dates. What I have tried is moving the dirs to /tmp and deleting them there. I'll have to wait and see if any reappear. I'm of the mind now that this is a linux problem and not a LinHES problem. But you (probably) knew that.

Check the myth_mtc.log and see if any of those dates show.

1) The dirs were back when I checked this morning

2) No reference to those dates in today's myth_mtc.log

I finally figured out what was going on. The linhes backup job reaches a point where, if a remote backup storage is enabled, it copies the backup directory to a remote server. If a remote backup store is not enabled, it copies the backup directory to another system disk. This keeps the system from burying the map with the treasure. You probably see where this is going. I kept deleting the files and folders from the backup of the backup. When the linhes backup job ran, it copied, from the main backup directory, the files I thought I had deleted. *sigh*

As Emily Litella would say: Never mind.

Good to see that you got to the "root" of the problem
