I have a HDHR with a comcast cable card that work perfect almost all the time. But there is one program that has an issue every morning. I have it set to record a program called SportsNet at 7AM and delete yesterday's episode. When I go to watch it, the video and audio start fine but within 10 seconds, the video begins to flicker between the video (as it should be) and a still of the initial screen of the recording. Audio continue as normal. Below is a log of the back end. Note that I am also recording another show that starts at the same time but never has an issue. Any anyone have any ideas?

Code:

I do the same thing with the morning news of "max episodes 1" and "delete oldest if too many" and it works for me so I don't think the recording schedule is related. I have noticed that high bandwidth shows are more prone to error when system resources are being used. So is it maybe that both shows are really high bandwidth recordings and so the system chugs?
Have you tried tuning in live to the show?
It's a cable card tuner but something stinks of copy protection BS.

It seems odd that it returns to the initial screen/frame of the recording. In my experience with damaged OTA recordings with hdhr, I get artifacts and skipping, but not reverting to an earlier image. I'm not sure if I have had any bandwidth issues and what that would cause, but I am curious if you have played the recording file back directly with any other player or machine to know if it is, in fact the recording, or if it could be something else. It has been several years simce using HDHR prime with cable and so I dont know if there could any nuances with encryption changing and needing to rescan or get any updates to the cable card...

To rule out a bandwidth issue, you could also skip the next recording of the simultaneous program. Maybe you could also try forcing it to record on a different tuner in case one of the 3 tuners is flakey.

Edit: is HDHR firmware up to date as well?

Great suggestion to check the recording elsewhere. I played it on my other frontend but got the same scrambled results. I copied the recording to my windows computer and it played flawlessly with Win Media player.

I also tried playing it 4 times in a row on my myth box and got different results. 1 time it played perfectly. 3 times it did the flashing back to an earlier. Based on that I checked the frontend log and found the following including a less then helpful VDPAU error message stating "#25, A catch-all error, used when no other error code applies."). Same messages on the other frontend log.

I've had my share of frustration with VDPAU in mythtv... I now launch kodi from mythfrontend to use for my frontend. I'm not sure if you're familiar with it or interested in trying, but you would need to install both kodi and the pvr.mythtv addon...

You could also try switching to a different decoder like OpenGL to see if that makes a difference. Might not be a good long-term solution for you, though. Might depend on the horsepower of your machine. I've had other quirks when using OpenGL.

Is there a way to call the internal player with verbose logging from the command line? What is the default "internal" player?

I don't think that there is any way to call it outside of mythfrontend. There's a little bit of information on verbosity of mythfrontend on the wiki page:

Not much progress in finding a root cause. I had Comcast installed last month and got their cable car. Everything is recording fine and playing fine except for this one show. If I play it back 5 times, I would guess that 1 time it plays perfect. I have gone to just playing and exiting until it works.

Did you ever try a different decoder? Or kodi?

Do you have this problem on only one channel from your provider? Can you watch live TV on the channel causing you grief?

Scan through your subscribed channels on live TV to see if any others are affected.

Some firmware for TV receivers honor the 'do not record' or 'record only once' flag. I had this problem on a Ceton PCIe 4 tuner card. I remember having a problem with the Fox channels and AMC family of channels. The company relented and a firmware update fixed it. My understanding is that they went back to honoring the flags but I have refused to update my firmware. I believe I also had the problem on my HDHR tuner. All this was a few years ago so the details are fuzzy but the core concept is there. I used some software (can't remember exactly what) to check the flags. I think it was the HDHR command line utility for linux. Also, if this is actually the problem, don't expect anyone at your cable company to understand what you're talking about.

When I had HDHR Prime, my cable company updated several cable channels with the Copy Once flag. This resulted in me being unable to tune to any of these channels on mythtv, so I wouldn't think that is the reason. I kind of wonder if it is a change to the encoding of the stream which the current nvidia driver may not support. Or perhaps a combination of the nvidia driver and version of mythtv. Hopefully you've found a workaround that is suitable for you.

Not sure if it counts as a work around but when the video starts jumping, i bookmark and back out to the recording menu and then back in. Works fine after doing this.

Even more interesting is that I have recorded other programs on the same channel at other times of the day without seeing the issue.

I remember sometimes having issues with playback where maybe the audio and video would get out of sync where "skipping" forward or back 10 seconds would fix the issue, whereas fast forwarding or rewinding would often be the cause of the issue. Since saving the bookmark and resuming works for you, you may check if skipping would be a quicker workaround.
