Just want to give my applause to you Knoppmyth masters.

"clap, clap, clap"

I was excited to see a new verion of Knoppmyth was released.
{RA516}

Saturday {Jun 4th 2005} morning, I did an upgrade and I was messing
with my Myth box when I received the infamous {irrecoverable disk
error} I had to leave for Six Flags with my family...

Ack I lost a hard drive... { which I had previously spent several weeks
tweaking... } Was I disappointed that I had yet to mirror this drive.
Or get the bootdisk tarball off onto another machine. Needless to say
I lost most of configs... I did save my XF86Config-4 though.. woot!

Well anyway... On Sunday morning, I decided to use my single 300GB
SATA drive that was meant for recordings only. {I plan to mirror this
once I purchase another drive here in the next week or two}

Once I figured out that I had to do a manual install and the partitions and
file systems need to to be in place I was off and running.

Manual install was rather straight forward.

Installation went pretty smooth {other then my nic not being autodetected}.

Once this was configured and completed. I had about 1.5 hours invested.

Moved in my XF86Config-4 restarted gdm and I was configuring my
tuners in mythtv-setup. Of course this release is using the stable
ivtv drivers of 0.2.2X which is fine for a pvr250/350. I have 5 tuners
configured. 1 pvr250, 1 pvr500 {2 tuners}, 1 pcHDTV{3000}, and firewire.
Note: The pcHDTV you will need to scan channels in the Channel Editor
in setup. This takes about 5 - 10 minutes.

Note: the tuner.ko and tveeprom.ko that reside in the
/lib/modules/KERNEL-VER/v4l/ directory causes issues with the PVR-500.

I deleted the tuner.ko and tveeprom.ko

I download the latest ivtv beta release {0.3.6} as of this writing.
Compiled and installed the drivers and the utils. I can add the steps
here if someone wants me to.

Copy the HcwMakoA.ROM to /lib/modules/

I then removed the driver {rmmod} and re-insert them {modprobe}.
Ran dmesg to verify all is well..

Started up mythfrontend...

Pressed WatchTV and I was watching tv... Bam... nice!!!

Pressed Y to move to the next tuner. Snow { Which I expected because
the first time the driver loads and downloads the firmware you must
shutdown the machine } I waited the normal 3 - 4 mins... Booted it
up again.. I can watch TV on all of my tuners... { one small issue
with firewire }

Note: Once you have this setup and did the channel scan for DVB.
You will need to run the DVBfixer.sh so you can use the channels from
Zap2it...

Note: Firewire : If you have a Motorola 6200 you will need to untar
the mythtv-18.1 in /usr/src/mythtv and compile the 6200ch and add
this as the external command for channel changing in myth... There
is a readme for compiling this and where to copy it to.

I was up and running in about 2 hours total with very little changes.

Connected to mythweb and started scheduling shows to be recoreded.

If this is supposed to be a hardware recommendation, please describe your hardware. If it's not, it doesn't belong under this forum topic.

Well actually you are wrong.. It says if I had to edit or change anything to
get Knoppmyth to work... Tier 2 is not strictly for HARDWARE...

I merely stated what I did to get my system up and running. In hopes that this or one of my steps helps someone else...

Rather instead of edit a file I replaced the drivers... and that is all I did.

Although I do the see the heading is a bit misleading... Besides I did post
my tuner hardware and I did make a change from out-of-the-box.

So this is best place I could see for my post...

I have a PVR 500 and have had a bear of a time getting it working in R510A (it still does not work and I have tried about 6 different ivtv versions)

I was considering upgrading knoppmyth to see if that helped.

I would be interested in the steps you took to get it working in the latest release.

Next time you have an issue with where I put my post. Send me a PM
suggesting where it should be placed.. If you had read my post carefully
and read all of the Headings and Descriptions {as I did} then you would
know why I posted it under hardware. {actually it was the description
that fit closest to my posting}

What did I do to get mine working... Hmm deleted a couple of drivers.
Downloaded the latest IVTV beta release. Installed them. Configured
Mythtv.. and I was done. Oh yea... What is it that makes hardware
work.. hmm Software?

I was merely trying post so I could help others... That is my one
and only goal.

Your post was not helpful to anyone other then stating the obvious
of your personality.

To think that I was rather excited about my post. Thinking that it would
be helpful to another.. and Prasing those wizards that take the time
to develop a wonderful piece of software. i.e KnoppMyth... and what

Everyone posts to the wrong forum/topic on occasion, it happens. Not sure why this thread got a bit testy (didn't really see the need) but oh well.

For use LinuxNoobs could you post how you compiled/installed the ivtv drivers? Also I would suggest you fleshed out the details on some items (like where you get the HcwMakoA.ROM) for those that don't know.

I for one thought your post was beneficial.

Ok this is for those that wish to compile the latest ivtv drivers. This is what I did to get my pvr-500 working. It has been really great now....

To compile the drivers and utils do the following EXACTLY! I assume complete linux noobs here - please do not be offended. : )

It you have another computer download putty. {Windows machine is
assumed.}

Here is the home page

This is the version I am using currently {get the latest}
http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty-0.58-installer.exe

Install this...

Then launch the putty program.
Enter the host ip of your Knoppmyth box where it says the Host Name(or
IP address). Then press Open.

You will be prompted for a logon and id. Use the root logon
when you installed Knoppmyth. Or if you prefer just do the following:

1. If you are in the Mythtv gui do a ctrl+alt+f1
This should bring you to a shell prompt. Logon in as 'root'
Note from here you can do the following from putty.

2. You must be logged in as root to do this.

3. cd /usr/src

4. wget http://www.ivtv.tv/releases/ivtv-0.3/ivtv-0.3.6o.tgz
Note: This is what I used last and works fine for me. This assumes
that your myth box has access to the internet. You will need this
to download the driver.

5. Then type
tar -xvzf ivtv-0.3.6o.tgz

6. Then cd to it
cd ivtv-0.3.6o
cd driver

7. Then type
make

8. Then type
make install

9. cd ../utils {that is dot dot/utils}
make

10. Then type
make install

If this is a clean install of RA516 then you need to remove the
tuner.ko and tveeprom.ko from the /lib/modules/2.6.11.9-chw-2/v4l/
directory. Also the HcwMakoA.ROM is on the cd that came with your
PVR-500. Insert the cd into your cd/dvd drive then enter 'mount /cdrom'
For me I then did a 'cd' to the directory of the firmware.

cd /cdrom/WinTV-PVR-150500MCE_2_0_30_23074_WHQL/
Then do a copy like so:

cp HcwMakoA.ROM /lib/modules/
Do a 'ls' to view the directory

ls -al /lib/modules

To remove the older kernel modules type this:

rm /lib/modules/2.6.11.9-chw-2/v4l2/tuner.ko
rm /lib/modules/2.6.11.9-chw-2/v4l2/tveeprom.ko

And you are done...

11. type reboot

When it reboots take a look at dmesg output
from a command prompt type:
dmesg | more
then type /ivtv

Oh don't forget to try out the Mythweb {Mythtv GUI} interface...

From another computer on your network.

Open a browser i.e. Internet Explorer

In the address: type http://IPADDRESSOFYOURMYTHBOX or name if
it can be resolved on your network.

Then select the Mythweb link

You should see your Program Listings.

Click on something you want to record. Select your options
and your done. WOOT!!!

Click on the Backend Status link... for Encoder{s} status, disk space avail,
etc...

Yeah, thanks for the help. I have my machine with PVR-250, HD3000, and PVR-500 up and running thanks to your suggestions here. One thing that I noticed on my PVR-500 is that I need to keep the tveeprom.ko and the tuner.ko in the locations that you said to delete them. I tried deleting them and the 500 won't tune. As soon as I put them back (and reload drivers or reboot) things work ok. I have noticed that the video is a little jumpy when watching the pvr's but otherwise it's pretty good.

Now to do some testing for a while and then move it into the livingroom.

Glad it help ya... The two kernel modules to delete are the ones from V4L...

When you rebuild the new IVTV drivers it will make the drivers to use...

With RA516 this will work everytime.... {it does for me}

Look in /lib/modules/<kernerl-ver>/ivtv/ <-- this is where they go when you do a make install

You should have 10 kernel modules in there...

This is what works for me...

One more thought.. You may need to shutdown for a few seconds after this because of the firmware download to the PVR-500. This is required the first time.. but subsequent driver rebuilds work without it... I am currently using 0.3.7a's without a hiccup....

All is working. It's still weird though, if I delete tveeprom.ko or tuner.ko I am unable to tune with the 500 but the 250 still works. I am using ivtv-0.3.6o right now.

I'm very happy in all (and wifey is happy too - believe it or not )

I have used your guide, and found that only one of my tuners has sound
if I do cat /dev/video1 > test.mpg I get sound, but cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg does not have sound I am using the newest ivtv-0.3.7a driver, do you have any suggestions thanks
