I really appreciated the responses. It is unfortunate that (a) an easy solution is not at hand and (b) I am far too impatient to wait any longer.

Today is my day off and if I must rebuild the system, today is the day to do it. I cannot do this during the week. In other words, I assess that my quickest solution is to rebuild the system to get it functional again.

Making the small change in the XF86Config-4 as described in the KnoppMyth Wiki reference above has turned into my worst nightmare. I apologize to have to put it this way, but that is my opinion at the moment. I hope somebody has knowledge on updating the KnoppMyth Wiki FontSizeHowTo to prevent this happening to others.

I have a lot of respect for the many folks that put together the KnoppMyth system, and who help others out at this forum. I am very appreciative of the hard work.

Even though a solution was not found for this particular problem, I hope that this thread will benefit others.

Do a "ls -l /dev/fd0" Maybe you had some kind file system corruption where it was damaged.

If its not there, recreate it with:

mknod /dev/fd0 b 2 0

then do a:

chmod ug+rw /dev/fd0

On a side note. Changing the X config to fix a font size problem seems weird to me and
it can be risky for your TV set. But that aside, your situation is unusal. Backing up your
config file and and restoring it after the change didn't take, should have restored you to
your prior state.

I broke down and rebuilt the system from scratch. It is back up and running. We lost data, but it really isn't all that much of a loss. There are a couple of ways to think about this experience. I choose to think about it that this was an opportunity for me to document how to build a system from scratch. I have the basic steps written down and hopefully, I can post them up in a week.
