I want to start this off with the fact that I am a complete Noob to all things linux. I work in a microsoft IT shop.

At the advice of a friend, I am trying to get knoppmyth R6B7 up and running On this box:

Gigabyte Nforce4 Pro SLI
Athlon 3500 939
EVGA 7800GT

I can go through the install, however before the menu comes up, when it gets to the video card, it displays a message saying unknown vendor/card, but everything looks fine. I get through the install, and reboot, and once the main screen comes up, it is apparent that it did not like the video card, as I can hardly see anything (very dim), and you can tell that there are very few colors (probably VGA). How do I go about loading the correct drivers? I have not recorded anything, and have no problem starting over if neccessary.

TIA

If the answer is already out there, please point me in the right direction.

You need a different (more recent but more problematic) version of the nvidia driver. One of the 8xxx series.

1) Flip to an alternate text console by hitting Ctrl-Alt-F1

2) Login as root using the password you set during the install

3) Install an 8xx series driver using:
Code:
install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8178

(This isn't the most recent version but they broke compatibility with the installation script sometime after this)

4) Restart the GUI environment using:
Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm restart

5) Flip back to the GUI console if necessary by hitting Alt-F7

Or... I could trade you a GeForce 6200 for you 7800GT - I assure you it works with MythTV ;)

Keep an eye on your CPU usage. If it starts running realy high you probably need to change you configuration to avoid the known issues. The "OpenGL Sync to Vblank" sticks in my mind but there are a couple others... See this page for more: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Release_Notes_-_0.19
