I have read a LOT of conflicting posts here. Most of which seem to have been written from Pre-Myth-0.19 versions.

Although I could follow Cesman's advice and visit mythtv.info, I am aware that there are a lot of things already installed and in place in R5B7. I have also been warned that apt-get is dangerous, even if you switch /etc/apt/sources.list to use stable sources, since KnoppMyth uses a hybrid of stable and unstable.

So, I'm asking if anyone who has gotten MythGame to work on either R5B7 or R5C7 to please engage me in a conversation that I'm sure will be beneficial to others.

(I'm assuming that R5B7 and R5C7 are the same in terms of MythGame, according to http://mysettopbox.tv/CHANGELOG.txt unless "Various little fixes" includes MythGame or MAME or something.)

I have managed to get "nes" and "zsnes" roms to work from the command line.

This was also a good lead because it is specific to Myth 0.19: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Co ... _Emulation

Under "Setup>Game Settings>Game Players" I have setup the "Nintendo: NES" (fce-ultra) Player with these settings:
Player Name: NES
Typ: NES
Command: /usr/games/fceu
Rom Path: /myth/games/nes/roms
Then did "Scan for Games". The terminal under I launch mythtfrontend reported successful found ROMs. Now I see the game under the games menu. I still can't get the A and B buttons to work on my 9019URF keyboard, but I think I'm on my way there.

That URI above should give you an idea of what emulator to setup for each ROM type, but you want to use "which zsnes" (or what ever app) to get the correct "Command:" path and look around /myth/games/ to find the roms paths.

I'll report my additional findings as I have them.

I've gotten both ZSNES and FCEU working fine in R5C7. However, their performance is less then I expected. Even with FCEU only using 10% of the cpu, the framerate is choppy, and audio is sub par.

ZSNES performance was improved greatly by unchecking the "use new graphics engine" option, but still not perfect.

I would think these should be able to run flawlessly on my machine (Athlon 3000+, 1GB Ram). Perhaps it's that I'm using the video out from my PVR-350, and switching to the s-video out on my video card would work better.

Edit: I should mention also that I'm using a USB game pad for input, and have had no problems. Other then I can't map a button to the game pad to exit FCEU, and the remote won't work either, so you have to use the actualy keyboard, which is a bit of a dissappointment. But I'm sure there's a solution for that somewhere. For ZSNES I mapped one of the buttons on the controller to exit the emulator, and it works great.

I have similar problems with xmame (using R5B7) but thought it was to do with PVR350 tvout. It was fine under R5A22. However I got zsnes working OK just using the player already setup under MythGame.

I have the same keyboard. I had to remap keys for zsnes. In my case it was the arrow keys that didn't work. I also have a weird mouse problem which makes using the mouse under the zsnes GUI config rather difficult - but since its not required once the config is done its not a real problem.

Have you tried adding to you ~/.lircrc file something like
Code:
begin
prog = fceu
button = EXIT
repeat = 3
config = Esc,Esc
end

Of course replacing the values of "button" and "config" to be what ever your exit button is labeled as, and what keystroke you use on the "actualy keyboard"

you have to remember that the remote performs much like the buttons on your keyboard, but it is configured to know what keystrokes to send to what program. It does not send keystrokes to arbitrary programs. Everything it does has to be instructed ahead of time.

Please report back your findings.

I added this to .lircrc:

Code:
##
# Begin FCEU bindings
##
begin
  button = Back-Exit
  prog   = fceu
  repeat = 3
  config = Esc
end

and there was no change. Esc on the keyboard still exits, but the remote's Back/Exit button still does nothing.

I'm fairly certian that the parameters are correct, here's the parameters for MythFrontend's back button in .lircrc:

Code:

# Escape/Exit/Back
begin
prog = mythtv
button = Back-Exit
config = Esc
end

Any other suggestions?

Also, how is everyone's ZSNES and FCEU performance? It certainly seems like my mythtv box should be able to run them at 100%, but the sound quality awful, and the game stutters.

edit: spelling errors. need to get off the meds.

I don't see any indication on the fceu project webpage that it supports lirc, so the approach above won't work. But see here:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Configuring_MythGame_0.18#lirc_and_fceu-sdl
I have also seen patchs to fceu enabling lirc.

My zsnes quality is pretty similar to what I get under Windows. Nothing to complain about, anyhow (obviously subjective).

I'll give this a try when I get home tonight.

As for performance, what are you using for your video out on your box? My suspiction is that using my PVR-350 as my video out instead of a dedicated GeForce card (which I have in the box anyway), might be the bottleneck. I'll toy around with my X11 config and set the display to use the S-Video out on my GeForce and see if that improves the performance.

My understanding is that this should produce all around better results for you. I can't think of any down side to doing this. Are there any specific benefits that you are getting from the PVR-350 that I am overlooking?

Just ease of set up, and the ability to plug into a tv that doesn't have an S-Video input (the 350's output is svideo as well as composite video). Oddly enough I have a tv that has component video in, but not s-video. In any case, the box is getting moved to a differant tv as soon as I finish all the setup I want to do.

I've mostly just done a straight install of the CD, so I'm still in the the stage of tweaking it. I have no hard reason to leave the output on the 350, other then it was working for the most part, and usually when things are working I try not to fiddle with it too much.

PVR350 out is generally supposed to be better than Nvidia tvout, be interesting to see what you think. Might result in better games but worse tv...

Well, I switched the output from the pvr 350 to the monitor for now (will switch it over to a tv when I get a chance), and while I can't comment on wether or not the picture is better/worse (the monitor I have is ridiculously old), the emulators run magnitudes better. both ZSNES and fceu run perfect now.

I have a MAME Cabinet running with an nvidia TV out and the quality seems to be pretty good. And I was'nt blown away by any means when I had my tv hooked up through the pvr 350.

next step is to try xmacro to be able to exit from nintendo games.

I installed x-macro and set my "Radio" button to ESC. Back-Exit wouldn't have worked well since I use it as my "back" button in mtyh, and Radio isn't used at all.

It works like a charm. Here's my edited .lircrc:

Code:
##
# Begin FCEU bindings
##
begin
  remote = grayHauppauge
  button = Radio
  prog   = irexec
  repeat = 3
  config = xmacroplay-keys :0 Escape
end

I hope this is still on topic (mythgame installation)

I haven't seriously tried to get mythgame to work. This IS my next challange (now that I finally got CC to work with the PVR-150).

Question: To avoid downloading and configuring stupid, outdated games, what SHOULD I try (as far as mythgame) to configure.. I.e. biggest bang for the buck type of emulators and games.

Using a Sega Dreamcast (older, but still fun) as an example, can mythgame at LEAST equal the quality of a Dreamcast? Not really interested in playing pong or Atari 8-bit games, but fairly good quality games.

So: To avoid wasting time trying to configure really LAME emulators and games that will never be played, then exactly WHAT emulator works best for mythtv? And what games are good.

Also: What remotes work best? Are there any decent wireless game controllers or even with wires, which ones work best.

I believe I heard of a Dreamcast emulator, does it work good, and what about a remote.

Thanks!

Mike
