ok so Ive done alot of reading, and I have figured out how to get it to start the rip process by making sure the mtd service is running and by changing the device path to /dev/dvd

now the problem is anytime i rip I get a log file created in the directory instead of the video and it immediatly stops and says No Jobs and nothing else to do. You could hit 0 to rip a dvd

the log file says this

15:18:13: DVD inserted: BRAVHART
15:18:13: : Title 1 is of type 2 (dvdinput table)
15:18:13: : Title 2 is of type 0 (dvdinput table)
15:18:13: : Title 3 is of type 0 (dvdinput table)
15:18:13: : Title 4 is of type 0 (dvdinput table)
15:18:13: : Title 5 is of type 2 (dvdinput table)
15:18:24: a client socket has been opened
15:18:30: launching job: job dvd 1 1 -1 0 -1 /myth/video/BRAVHART
15:18:30: Using DVD source: /dev/dvd
15:18:30: ISO DVD image copy to: /myth/video/BRAVHART_001of
15:18:32: Error: DVDISOCopyThread dvd device read error
15:18:33: job failed: job dvd 1 1 -1 0 -1 /myth/video/BRAVHART
15:18:50: launching job: job dvd 1 1 0 0 -1 /myth/video/BRAVHART
15:18:50: job thread beginning to rip dvd title
15:18:50: Error: DVDPerfectThread read failed for 25 blocks at 8
15:18:51: job failed: job dvd 1 1 0 0 -1 /myth/video/BRAVHART

Either your DVD drive is having problems (I've seen it before) or you didn't install pineapple correctly. Look at this thread: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5299

Ok
#1) I can find anything reference to pinapples on that post,
#2) DVD's only play the first title when I try to rip the dvd, I get the selection menu and then when I press 0 it starts to rip for 1 second then comes up nothing else to do. It then drops the mtd.log file in the rip directory

I did an auto isntall to begin with, and have not modified a whole lot.
Just the setup for the device path (I coudlnt even get to the rip selection menu before that was setup)
mtd is also running ok

Im lost as to what try next
thanks!

well I found my answer, and I have to say I cant believe that all my problems were due to one bloody command that i could have typed and everything would have worked.

I would have saved 4 days of troubleshooting and pulling my hair out.
I reinstalled 3 times, spent hours searching forum after forum and even bought a new DVD drive cause I thought maybe it wasnt compatible.

well I am posting the answer to this frustration here
see this topic
http://www.mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewto ... 1493#61493

The answer to playing back / Ripping DVD's?
execute this.

ls /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples/<tab> | sh

In my country it is perfectly legal to backup copies of your Movies youve purchased, and this is the whole point of my media center I want the convenience of having all my dvds in one place where i can conveniently access them.

well at least its working now! :D

You have just named "pineapple". I can't believe you've read ANY of the posts regarding this issue.

OPEN DISCUSSION OF RIPPING COPY-PROTECTED DVDS IS NOT ALLOWED ON THIS BOARD.

And now that you've broken the rule, cesman will have to delete this thread.

And why didn't you figure it out from the hint I left you?? Did you not read my quote in the other thread?!?

"Have you checked out the doc files included on the system? Look carefully in the directory /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/examples. I think you'll find everything you need there."

ARRRGGH!

We all wish we could say this, but we cannot. Please respect my wishes when it comes to discussion certain topics on the forum.

Well Ripping dvd's is one thing, but playing them certainly is another.

And Im not talking about openly discussing how to do it.

If someone would have said.
"The reason your DVD stuff isnt working is because KNoppmyth doesnt support it out of the box"

I have done ALOT of searchign the forums and Ive found reference to this "pineapple" a couple of times. But even googling it came up with nothing, I had no clue what you were talking about. I have read tons of posts on people with DVD troubles. and the answers they got were things like "check your mtd.log" which again says nothing about copy protection errors, jsut cryptic messages like "DVDREADISOERROR" Cannot read from the Device

If I had stuck i na DVD and the error that popped up said "MYTHTV DOES NOT SUPPORT DVD PLAYBACK"

I would have instantly known why.

Im talking about saving people Days of headache and frustration.

Im fine with the fact that knoppmyth doesnt want to support it, But how about making some CLEAR information on the fact that the errors received are because of the unsupported yet included DVD playback feature.

Actually, no it's not. In order to play the disc, it has to be readable. In order to be readable, it has to be decrypted. In order to legally decrypt the DVD, your product has to be granted a license from the DVD forum (or whoever does the licensing for DVD playback). In order to be granted a license, you have to pay a lot of money, impractical for free open-source software... plus I think there are code issues that make it impractical, if not impossible, to decrypt a DVD via open-source code.

So ultimately it is the same issue, which is why KM does not ship with DVD playback enabled. It's basically the same reason why Fedora or Ubuntu does not come with MP3 playback enabled.

Understood.

and I also respect and understand why the Command to enable it should not be posted.

But I do not understand or respect the fact that the error messages that come up on screen and in logs have nothing to do with the problem, they are cryptic i cannot imagine it would be too hard (open source and all) to change the error message or add a message when people hit DVD Play explaining the situation about legality and the reason the feature is disabled. and why nobody can just say on the board that that is the problem.

Instead of cryptic answers or no answer at all.

Do you even know how many things I myself have stated this? This thread ends here...

My point exactly, you shouldnt have to state this.

It should be evident in some form. A detailed error message, a sticky in the forum about DVD playback and Ripping (which I think would ultimately be the easiest solution.)

I thought the forum was here to help people avoid frustration. Well there I was frustrated and 4 days without a clear explanation ... I shouldnt have to search the forum for 4 hours to find this information out. Not to mention I also searched other forums goodled and visited the Irc Channel and asked you about the DVD error i was recieving. All Im asking for is a sticky to save other people from what I went through.

I am glad that you have said this numerous times to help people.
But Ive only seen it once and that was the same day I learned about it 4 days late.

I dont think I am asking for alot, and I think it would be a great help to newbies like me who are trying to get involved in the linux community.

If it took me 4 days to find this information out even when searchign the forums, chances are someone else is going to as well.

What? Don't you understand the meaning of 'this thread ends here'? I don't like discussing this crap because it really pisses me off to no end. As much as I'd love to, I cannot include everything to allow you to play everything fricking codec under the sun. I ask for folks to mind thier Ps &Qs around certain topics. I don't want to get sued by an over zealous industry that doesn't care about or know the meaning of fair use. If I say stop, I mean stop.

#1 ) You did not write "This thread ends here" cesman did.

#2) All I am asking for is to let people know that playing dvd's is unsupported, not how to play them or how to install it or even where to find the information.

I understand all your concerns and completly respect the fact that you dont want decryption discussed. But dont get upset when people cant even figure out that it is unsupported because of legality concerns.

I know Ill probably get my account deleted and this thread deleted by even writing back, but at least you know Im not trying to have peopel discuss the details on getting it to work, just discuss that any errors recieved could be because that feature isnt supported.

Guess it doesnt pay to try and help out the community.
