FIRST: my hardware
MSI micro ATX KT-266 motherboard
AMD duron 950
256mb OCZ tech DDR ram
160GB maxtor hard drive
Haupauge PVR350 (less than a month old)
Built on motherboard hardware:
video: savage 4 (thats the driver it likes usually)
network: some intel thing I think... it's never had a problem in linux or knoppmyth
sound: no idea... look up the board, it's a KM2M by MSI
1: menu doesnt display on tv, only on monitor (except for the one time, but I had back end errors)
2: after ALL shut downs, X refuses to start
3: every install produces different errors, sometims it hangs, sometimes the remote refuses to work... etc
like I said it has sorta worked but it displayed only television and recorded programs through the PVR350 except for one fluke installation where it all wen therough it (it was neat till the backend didnt work) then when the power cut out the X server had issues restarting. I reinstalled like 5 times untill it finally worked good again but when I tried to restart it it refused to restart X...
I dont know enough about linux to know how to fix this and unfortunately if i cant get a straightforward solution I'll have to go back to windows which I had working after a long howto in command prompt, but had many issues with correct time and it chugged because it's windows... I hope this all works out because it worked smooth for the short while it worked (even though it had the multi screen issue)

Electrohacker, firstly welcome to the world of KnoppMyth, I will let you in on a little secret.
Only post in this forum (Installation) if there is a problem whilst the CD is in the drive and installing the software, if it is outside of this then you will have to post in another forum.
As to addressing your problems, could I suggest you do an install and then work through your issues one at a time this way it will be easier for everyone.

Hi,
Selected Bootsplash? As root # killall gdm, change /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to be fb1 , restart gdm # gdm see if that helps.
Any further help, follow Girkers advice so we don't get yelled at

Hi,
Do alt + x, a terminal should open. enter $ su - then enter password for admin.
Do # nano -w /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and scroll down to where it says fb0. change to be fb1, both places, save and exit.
Do # reboot
If planning to do tv out, bootsplash is not needed nor should be selected and this problem would never arise.

oh so the whole problem is the boot splash? this is the first time I've seen the option since before I was useing a copy that was a year or so old. I will admit though that the new version seems to have eliminated all the old bugs i was haveing.

well that solved both of those problems.
now the volume control on my silver haupage remote doesnt work(it moves the volume indicator but the volume doesnt change).
also there doesnt seem to be a way to select a show from the tv guide. and there apear to be unused buttons.
so basically 2 questions
1: how to make myth tv control the sound output on my haupauge output
2: how to assign buttons (mainly how to select shows from the program guide)

Hi,
#1 I think I can help, simply loop the PVR-350 audio back into line in of your sound card. You have to run alsamixer to check the mute is off for line in and there is some level (just under the red is good)
Also you will have to go into the Utilities/Setup and change from pcm to master.
See if that helps. The two buttons below the vol are the level +/-

Open an xterm (Alt-X from the GUI) and in it type the following command then hit enter:
Code: alsamixer
The rest should be pretty obvious if you've ever used a mixer board.

Try running it as root. After you get the command prompt type "su -" and give it the root password when prompted, then continue as before.

Hi,
$ alsamixer then press enter
should run as mythtv user, actually I am not sure which is the best way to run it as one way the settings don't seem to "stick" after a re-boot.
Did I miss where there was audio from anything? Can you play a cd, and hear it?
Some of the on-board audio circuits get a little stupid and you may have to run as root # alsaconf to help it sniff out the correct driver.
Try playing a music cd first.

I turned up the mixer and pluged it all togther with a million wire adaptors (there has to be a more direct way of controlling the volume off the PVR=350) and it was way to quiet and when I cranked the amplifier I'm useing to power the speakers it sounded tinny and horrible.
