I've tried every setting I can think of to get this to work. I could use some help.
all recordings at 1080i work with standard XvMC enabled, but 720p recordings seem to be about half? speed. If I turn off XvMC they play almost regularly, but my processor is not quite fast enough.

DMA is enabled.
If I watch any of the 720p videos on my WinXP box, they play fine. so I know they are recording correctly.

The Chaintech FX5200 runs an nvidia chip, I think. You should be able to use the nvidia driver for it.

XyMC is supposed to decrease cpu utilitization, according to http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC

Yes, it is an NVidia chip. I guess I just assumed it loaded the latest nvidia driver on installation. Is there another version I should be trying?

It doesn't look like the other thread you mentioned came upon any solutions, did it? My TV will only accept a 1080i input.

Is your output switching display modes based on content resolution, or is it locked at 1080i? That's a fairly low spec box for HDTV even with XvMC acceleration, and if it's having to scale the output it could be pushing it over the edge...

nvidia has a driver available apart from the linux written one, at least according to that first link I gave. I don't know which one km installs.

A Duron 1400?!? Is this a misprint?

I can't believe you could watch anything HD on this box. I even had to push my RAM to 1G to avoid stuttering when my system was comm flagging, and I have a P4 3GHz HT processor.

Not a misprint (except note that it's running at 1733MHz), it works great with 1080i source and xvmc enabled. I'm not comm flagging. I'm hesitant to buy a faster processor if it won't fix my problem. I had thought 720p material should be easier on a system than 1080i material.

720p plays almost OK without XvMC at 1080i. why would it be worse with XvMC turned ON?

Nevermind. I could only find it under /proc/sys/dev/hpet/max-user-freq
And it didn't make a bit of playback difference.

I did a fresh install of R5D1 again last night. I was able to play both 720p and 1080i material perfectly at the default monitor resolution (using XvMC). I'm guessing 1024x768 or 800x600?

Once I changed the output to 1080i (instead of the default monitor resolution), 720p videos would no longer play smoothly. If I disable XvMC, I can watch 720p videos again.

I still don't understand how enabling XvMC actually degrades my performance.

I purchased an NVidia GeForce 6200 to try out in place of the FX5200. It seems to solve the problems playing back 720p on a 1080i display.

I'll use the 5200 in a frontend only system that only needs the S-video resolution.

Oddities I've found:

I had to enable 'deinterlacing' with the 6200 for a decent picutre. If I had it enabled on the 5200, it looked really terrible.

video often gets "jerky" on the 6200 after I quickskip past commercials. It does not get any better... I have to 'esc' out and then hit 'enter' to restart. A minor inconvenience since it automatically saves my position when I exit (nice feature).
