I have used and love Myth on and off for over a year now, and one thing always bothered me, I couldn't browse recordings, or pictures, etc, while watching something. As soon as I went to the menus, what I was doing ended...
...a couple weeks ago I setup an Windows MCE box for my parents (well, they had the box, I just added the PVR150 card for them) And two things struck me. One...wowee it was easy to setup and use. Myth is good, but not quite that easy.
And two, if I'm watching live tv, a recording, whatever, I can hit a button and start browsing other recordings WHILE it keeps playing in a small window (like PIP)
If Myth could do that with what you are watching or listening too, it would be perfect. Being able to perform other tasks in myth (browse the web for example) while listening to music or watching a show would be a huge improvement.
Anyhow, that's my .02, not sure if that features been discussed, or being developed anywhere...but I for one would be very grateful to have it.

This is a Myth issue, not a KnoppMyth issue.

And your point?
I posted in the MythTV section that is described as "General discussion about MythTV."
I would think, some of the people here, using KnoppMyth (and possibly other versions of MythTV as well) might be able to answer my question.

It has come up before on the mailing list; if you search the mailing list archives you should be able to find threads dealing with it. I don't think the MythTV developers are keen about it.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a fairly big change...though, technically, it shouldn't be a difficult change. They've allready got the hard parts done, and it shouldn't be too different than how they show the PIP screen.
The main reason they probably aren't keen, is it means a lot of tedious work throughout themes, and pages, to display that window with the show playing...if it's playing.
And trust me, as a coder, you take difficult and stimulating, over simple and tedious most days.

I wholeheartedly agree. All the good satellite and cable boxes have the ability to put what you are watching in a little window while you view the detailed TV listings. With Myth's open nature it should be able to do that and a whole lot more. That said, I have been looking for a long time for a device to do similar things that allows cusotmization. Obviously the satellite and cable boxes are closed to the manufacturers. Some IPTV boxes have developer SDK's but typically it is $50,000 to get them. So I am currently messing around with Myth Tv and waiting for the day when they have something like this.

Isn't that present in the latest MythTV version?

Myth does it when you view the tv listings while watching live tv. So that would be where one could start to look...

This also gets into the issue that it would be nice to be able to start MythMusic playing and then drop back into the menus to do something else and still have the music playing. However, I can understand how making this sort of fundamental UI change would require a complete overhaul of everything Myth. Something that I am sure is not going to be happening anytime soon. The only "solution" I can see as likely is someone starting a whole new FE program. I can't think of any reason the BE would need to be changed at all, but the FE would probably need to be completely rewritten. Though without having looked through the FE code, this is just a guess.

I haven't been here in a while...I wonder if anything further has been done in this regard?

You are talking to the wrong people. To the best of my knowledge there are not any core MythTV developers who hang around the KnoppMyth forums.
KnoppMyth is a Linux distribution aimed at making it easy to set up a system running the MythTV application, however, Cecil, Dale and the rest of the KnoppMyth folks here are consumers of the KnoppMyth application, not developers.
What you asking would require changes to the core MythTV application, which the KnoppMyth distro developers and community have next to no influence over.
The bottom line is that you're pretty much wasting your breath complaining to us, unless you're just looking for attention (negative or otherwise).
If you want to affect change in how MythTV works, your best bet is to go pester Ian & Co., or better yet contribute code.

Clearly that's your "bottom line", and it's too bad you find Gibble to be a pest, but opinions vary. Some users in a similar state of ignorance may be interested in answers to questions which experts think are obvious. For example, I found most of the thread educational.
Gibble, please keep in mind that when 'tjc' says "us" it doesn't mean everybody, but merely those who think as he does.

I thought thornsoft had already done a pretty good job covering this.
- Cecil & co. can't do anything about it, because they don't control that code.
- The people who do control that code don't visit here.
- Therefore making these requests here is ineffective at best.
Having Gibble come back two months later and asking in effect "Have you fixed it yet?" left me with an overwhelming desire to clarify this point once and for all. Much like I've written any number of documents and how-tos both here and on the wiki so we don't have to repeat the same answers.
It's nice of you to be supportive of Gibble, and I was bing a bit sharp, but I was also trying to guide him towards more effective action. After all, If you don't like the way the laundry starches your shirts, obsessing to your coworkers about it ad nauseum doesn't do anything but alienate them. To get results you either need to talk to the cleaners or take your business to a different laundry.
