I was messing around with the latest version of GeeXboX the other day and was impressed how nicely it's UPnP client connected to the UPnP server on my KnoppMyth R5E50/SVN backend serving up my Recording, Movie, and Music content.

Got me to think. For my remote frontend all I do 90% of the time is watch media and listen to music. Wonder if a hardware based UPnP client would fit my needs for.

Needs
1. Playing MythTV HD Recorded Content
2. Playing MythVideo Content which is mostly home DVD rips, and XviD.
3. Playing MythTVmusic content
<bonus> Using Albumart
4. Quite
5. Energy efficient

So in researching 3 Hardware options look ok.

Buffalo PC-P3LWG/DVD
I-O DATA LinkPlayer2
D-Link DSM-520

The Buffalo looks a good choice for HD, wondering if anyone has tried this device and their thoughts?

I just picked up a DSM-510 yesterday and am hoping to use it with my MythTV setup. Got it working with Windows Media Player 11 as the UPnP server, but couldn't seem to get it to detect MythTV. Still more hacking to do. Will keep you posted on my progress.

Cool, If you have the time I suggest upgrading to MythTV SVN, are improvements in UpNP code that may help. Normal running SVN warnings apply though....

Does UPnP work at all out of the box with R5E50? Just trying to figure out whether I need to upgrade to the bleeding edge code just to get my DSM-510 to connect.

I bought one, plugged it in, and it worked great. See Hardware forum for fast-forward problem, but otherwise, the best $215 I ever spent.

I have a D-Link DSM-520, and even though it recognizes my KnoppMyth UPnP server, it won't see my MP3s, which have ID3 v1.1 tags. Any idea as to what might be the problem?

When using a media player like the DSM-510 with the mythtv UPNP server, do you get to see the episode synopsis information, recording date and other information when browsing your recordings? Thanks!

No, not at the present time. It just shows episode, date, Genre and Recording Group. Very limited, but if you know what you want to watch, you can watch it. Maybe the uPnP server will be enhanced to add such features, but in the meantime, I'd rely on mythweb for that other information.
