I use Asus Pundit P1-AH2 SFF pc's for my diskless frontends. I have heard that people generally have good results with these systems, but I am having no luck at all with this problem.

I'm trying to output analog stereo (out of the headphone jack). This works, but I have no internal volume control through myth. The "aumix" program allows me to set 0% and 100%, but I cannot move the bars in between those values, only the end points.

Settings:
Audio output device: /dev/dsp
Mixer device: /dev/mixer
Mixer controls: I have tried PCM and Master, neither work

That is pretty typical if the driver is using the "lowest common denominator" Intel AC'97 spec for the card. The only choices for PCM are on and off. You usually get around this by choosing a different mixer control like "Master" in the MythTV setting screens.
Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> 3rd screen (labeled "Audio")

You might also be able to play some games with the alsaconf or alsactl utilities. For example you might need to use a different mixer device... Running alsamixer will show you the possible input names.

Hi,

While you are where tjc said to go, check if you have an option in the pass through selection.

tjc: Tried both mixer devices, to no avail. I'll play with the alsa utils when I get home and let you know how it works.

mjl: I have two options, "default" and "ALSA:iec958:{AES0:0x02}". I use default, but I don't pass anything through to a receiver or other AC3 decoder.

tjc: Alsa utils are of no help. Mixer just shows "master", with an infinity sign. Alsactl is a command line utility which I haven't had time to study just yet; any suggestions as to how to utilize this to fix my problem? Alsaconf reconfigured my drivers, but with no changes in my problem.

mjl: Changed passthrough device, no change.

Did you scroll all the way to the left/right? It may not be immediately obvious but if alsamixer shows 6 '<' or '>' characters in the border there are more controls off the screen in that direction....

Well, I'm using this same barebones setup as a BE/FE. But since I've only used the TV volume I've never noticed this before today. It seems as though volume is on or off 0%=0 2-100=100%. I'll see if I can google around for more suggestions.

Hi,

I don't pass anything either, well maybe some gas, however my Compaq had the same issue. Vol 0 or 100 % When I switched "default" and "ALSA:iec958:{AES0:0x02}". to what ever the ALSA iec it works. That change and the settings in alsamixer was my fix.

Have been playing around and googling for some time now. I can't find anything about this problem... Just random linux sound issues with the Realtek ALC861 that knoppmyth detects the Nvidia HD sound as...

Damn. This is a big blocker for high WAF!

http://parker1.co.uk/blog/?page_id=25 Martin about half way down describes problem (august 10) and his fix (august 20).

The volume control issue was easy to solve (was defaulting to Front Mic input, just needed changing to PCM),

But I think I tried that to no avail. Maybe I'm missing something.

Problem is, my mixer only shows master, an no volume control. Just L/R mute.

Have you tried typing in?

Sorry, must be lost... Typing in what? When I said my mixer only shows master, I meant my alsamixer program.

In mythfrontend, I've tried all possible permutations of the following:

Devices [/dev/dsp, ALSA:default]
Passthrough [Default, ALSA:iec:xxyyzz]
Mixer device [/dev/mixer, default]
Mixer controls [PCM, master]

Sorry, I thought you were talking about the FE Mixer device. That seemed to be the fix in the link I posted.

Is there any volume control with mplayer or xine? Does it just happen in the myth player?
