I will be doing a reinstall of the latest knoppmyth and it will be used pretty much just for playing back videos and viewing pictures so it will be a frontend/backend system on one pc. Is there any problem doing the install with no tv capture card installed? I just thought I would ask before I get started.

Hi,

No issues, I do it many times without a tuner. Later if you do add one, it should pick it up and then has you do the settings. You will want to turn off the mythfilldatabase in the settings. Under General I think it is located. Just to be "tidy"

I have a similar issue - I want to use just a 4 input bttv card to watch and record video from several video sources. How do I select the source and even watch the video?

(maybe there is an existing thread on this?)

Hi,

Just have to set up a v4l video, do everything except setting up the tuner and disable auto mythfilldatabase. I usually use that for doing motion. Setup a source of video, then add a "channel", I use 1. Then you should be able to attach it to the composite in the inputs. I would assume that if you were to use all four inputs that you would need to make a channel for each, 126,127,128,129 ? That is out side the normal tv band. I don't usually use the audio with motion so never went down that path.

Maybe some one else on the forum has better details but this should help get you started.

You can do a search for basic motion that I put some notes on a while back ~ a year ago.. man time flies!

Thanks for the reply. I got the bttv cards working as you had suggested, now I can watch live 'tv' (actually the composite inputs). I also found a good link with details to setting this up ..

I havent had a chance to use motion - but that will happen.

Hi,

To use motion there are a couple tweaks to do. If you read my posted notes of Basically Motion it may help. Just be aware that you can generate a lot of files very quickly and at a certain point (somewhere around ~2500) you have to do extra work to remove them.
