My PC consistes of a Tyan 2460 Dual AMD MoBo,512 Ram, a 20 gig 7200 RPM OS drive dedicated for KnoppMyth and a 40 gig drive for media files.I am using ths strandard HDD controller built into the AMD MPX Chipset

Any thoughts???

Still no luck.I replaced the hardrive with a different brand, wiped the drive free of partitions (I also unplugged the other 40 gb drive in case it was causing issues with Lilo),did my 6th install with the same results....just a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen after the bios page dissappears!

This is a real pissoff as I have installed redhat, mandrake and gentoo all on this box and had it boot sucessfully.

I am suspecting that Knoppmyth is incorrectly writing the bootstrap to the wrong location?

I AM the guy you want to communicate with as I am one of the few SMP users here and have several SMP systems I can test Knoppmyth on.I will only be willing to invest further time into Knoppwith if one of the moderators or the developers work with me on this.I will have dishes pointed at 68,91,110 & 119 .I have been a systems consultant - Systems OEM for almost 10 years and have experience with all flavours of Winblowz (anyone care? LOL) Novell, and many distros of Linux so I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to OS preinstall and unbeatable when it comes to hardware experience.
Unfortunately tho I am as dumb as a stump when it comes to programming. I can be reached via email and my icq 17101788 is online 24/7
I would really like to use Knoppmyth and it would get used well in my home.I would then be able to participate and involve myself in these forums helping others and the development team also.

I guess the ultimate solution to my problem is to build an approved hardware platyform based on cheap components as recommended but why waste a nice SMP rig?

Looking forward to getting on with the show!
Cheers

Well I don't think people are ignoring you they just don't really know where to go as they have not had the problems you are experiancing. You could try downloading a R4V3 iso and try using that, as it had an SMP kernel as the default. This was changed in R4V4. If you do that you will obviously have to use the .deb's to upgrade myth, but this is what I had to do because the new kernel is less than stable with my wireless card.

Thank you for your quick reply. How do you find ver3? Stable?.if I use the debs to upgrade myth is it fairly straitforward? Will I be able to use the Twinhan Vision plus 1020a?

If so I will try once more...another late night with lotsa coffee!

Just for the record I switched out my WD drive and replaced it with an IBM drive and it works perfectly. HMMMM must be something with that WD drive. I am going to mess around with it some more. See what i come up with.

the upgrade is fairly straight forward. There are some sticky posts about upgrading to 0.15 with the debs if you follow those instructions it's easy, the only gotcha's are some of the mythfill database stuff that changed for the North American people between those versions.

Not sure about the Twinhan Vision plus 1020a I've never heard of that and don't even know what type of device it is.

The Twinhan VisionPlus is a DVB-S PCI satellite tuner card based on software compression and the BT848 Fusion chipset which is becoming quite popular.
Incidentally I have downloaded 2 more images :R4V3 and R4V4 (I had tried R4V4.1).I also noticed on some ftps that there is a Version 5 folder which is empty. Is there a version 5 in the immediate works and to be released in the next few days?

I wouldn't bother with R4V4 it is basically the same as R4V4.1 There is an R5 in the works, but It is not near completion. It will hopefully solve lots of the kernel problems. If I were you I would try the R4V3 install, you can search the forums for the dvb stuff, We don't use them here in the US, so I don't know much of anything about them.

Tier 3 isn't the place to discuss hardware problems and how to resolve them.

Actually cesman my problem IS NOT hardware.I have now tried once again a clean fresh install now of r4v3 as suggested with ther same results and had to resort to using WinXP and ProgDVB.I am not happy as this is a poor alternative to Knoppmyth.I wish i had the finances to submit a dual AMD board for the developers.I am convinced it is a lilo issue with the bios which is updated and works fine with 5 other operating systems...therefore it must be a software issue.I am gonna go buy myself a cheapo all-in-one board when I get some cash and use that instead for my Knoppmyth PVR.
One thing for sure...Someone should start a sticky for approved hardware setups that are working including informatyion like bios revisions, dvb card used, sound card, modules etc etc to get the perfect Knoppmyth solution working with few/no hiccups.even better is a list of components known to FAIL would be of benefit also.
XSecrets,I would love to be involved in the hardware testing phase of this project to fix the oddball issues.Do you thing I should try the latest install of Debian or Knoppix instead? Will the existing tarballs on the r4v4 cd compile on these OS's..I am itching to try knoppmyth so bad I can taste it.... :D

Xsecrets...incidentally the kernel in r4v3 is not SMP by default (at least not the default kernel that boots off the cd)

Cheers

Boot off the CD, quit the installer.
mount -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
chroot /mnt/hda1
mount -t proc /proc proc
apt-get update
apt-get install lilo
lilo -v
umount /proc
exit
reboot

I wrote all that then noticed the thread you link states how to fix... If that does work...
