If a complete list has been laid out somewhere please slap me!

I notice there is an Incomplete wiki page on Knoppmythwiki.org, so my intention will be to write one, if not get a decent one started.

Not so much tied to the hard ware, more so how to configure alsa correctly and how to get 2 channel sound to all, whilst keeping 5.1 where appropriate (if this is possible).

I have got a number of forum posts I need to go through properly as well, but most seemed a little lacking in the complete picture, just throwing tid bits here and there.

Lil' project on hold till I get HD Playback sorted, but I am still interested in any input from the Surround Sounders out there. If you got a minute, few quick words or points in a direction would be much appreciated.

I had no trouble with it. With the Internal player, just select /dev/dsp, xine and mplayer use their own config options which are quite well documented. The .xine/config option is:
"audio.output.speaker_arrangement:Surround 5.1" for 5.1 (duh!). Other options are documented. That was on line 275 of my config file.

How much research have you done, really? ;-)

Mike

I never said the research was done when in a state to understand it

I had a heap of links to follow up that probably had the information, just a little lacking in time.

Either way I think I'll flesh out a wiki article, just to put it in a nice central easy to follow spot :D

Mental note to self: Don't post whilst intoxicated ;-)

Fabulous that you're doing a wiki entry for this.

Thanks on behalf of all of us too lazy to do it (me).

I have an Audigy card and have the audio output device set to ALSA:plug:surround51, I also have the mixer device set to default.

When I play music it only plays through the front 2 speakers and Surround sound stuff works properly.

Thanks, I'll add it when I write things up.

For music I think it wouldn't be a big deal to set to all four speakers (As most music I know of is stereo). But I guess for TV/DVD you'd either have to choose surround or stereo -> all speakers (but limited to stereo only).

Also I assume Audigy 1, which version of it though? And are you able to tell me which Output goes to which set of speakers.

I have some Time off In Lieu coming up, I figure I will be working on this wiki entry then. I sorted my HD issues, so frees me up :)

I am also interested in getting analog surround sound to work. However, I have little experience with Knoppmyth so won't write the wiki, but look forward to reading it. I would also like to set up a shortcut key to swap the front and surround speakers. I have more pressing issues to work out before I care about surround right now.

Good Luck

Thanks, the GF is going out Saturday arvo, so might have a look then. Well practised in wiki writing now, been doing lots of documentation at work!

As for a shortcut key, sounds like a good idea! I'll have to think about that one though, not real experienced with scripting. I'm better at getting stuff to work, if someone's written it, I can usually fiddle enough to make it behave.

Actually we NEED newbies to put some of this stuff in language that _they_ can understand. After many years of living in the Unix/computer world there are too many things that it's very hard not to assume are natural and obvious to anyone with three working neurons.

well on that last note, I am a definately a newbie and I made a few discoveries tonight, although I still don't have analogue surround sound.

I did find this website with some good info on it and still have to read it a bit closer
http://www.halfgaar.net/surround-sound-in-linux

I also found
#alsamixer

This allowed my to go in and set the mixer to 6 channels, and make other adjustments

I also found
#test-speaker -c 6
which will play white noise through each of the channels (still only have the front to work. ctrl-c will stop the test too.

I realize this is all basic, but hopefully it gets us closer to making it work.

JJ

To note, I have had it working, so as soon as I get some time I will write up a wiki.

Interested in what spots go to which speakers on the different sound cards. Mines an intel on board, can't remember which is which at the moment.

And also interested in what others have done.

Apologies to anyone waiting, just really busy at work and sorting out a few other things on the home network (the mythbox is a small part, have a server running a few vm's and a web server hosted in a data centre somewhere in the states).

Just plugged mine in properly finally. The rear speakers are quiet. Haven't found much info yet.

Didn't need to do anything special to get them working initially and have uncommented the surround line in the xine.

Not hardware (swapped inputs around).

Not much info out there either.

Just curious...

what are the pros and cons for using analog surround sound instead of digital?
