Is there a command line or a shortcut key that will switch the active monitor (I have two plugged into the dual head graphics card) on the fly (without rebooting)?

Well, if I had this issue, I'd create two shell scripts. One that would copy A and for for B of the different xorg.conf. Then, I'd make a shortcut in Fluxbox that called A with perhaps <ALT><A> and one for B with <ALT><B>. Perhaps something like:

cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.A /etc/X11/xorg.conf
#Uncomment the below to have X restarted
#pkill X
Of course, you'd have to put the scripts in /etc/sudoers...

Clever. Would killing X mean I'd have to restart mythwelcome or whatever I had open?

The reason I want to do this is sometimes I just want to check the listing guide or something and don't want to start up my big energy sucking main display which takes a bit of time to warm up.

You'll notice, I commented that line. MythTV should start back up. KnoppMyth-run is what we use to kickoff the frontend. Whatever other program you had running, yes you'd have to restart.

If all you want to do is check the listing guide, etc. why not use MythWeb? http://ip.of.your.backend. Lots of good info there!

Yeah, I thought about MythWeb. Definitely a cool little interface. Especially if you want to copy/paste in a setup property. That might be what I do. The only downside is it involves going to another computer and you can't watch TV from it (afaik). Thanks for your input.

Would this also work to switch between pvr350 s-video out
and GeForce component output. I noticed that what you are doing
is having two xorg.conf files and changing from one to the other.
I watch recordings in my room non=HDTV s-video via pvr350
just bought a HDHR and geforce7600 w/component out to use on my
living room HDTV. The only other way i can see is to split the component
out and covert one over to s-video but that may cost some bucks to do.

Let's say we have 3 files in /etc/X11:

I am trying to do something similar, but maybe someone could help me out with the rest of the detail. I have my 2 xorg.conf files, and can change them from the command line.

How do I make them into scripts?
How do I create a shortcut in fluxbox?

Sorry for the noob questions, any help or links would be appreciated.

To write a script, just copy the text into a new file and then give the file run permissions. Typically, I have to add the script to my sudoers file and then in the flux box app, call the script with the sudo command

# chmod +x /usr/bin/ThisIsMyScriptName.sh
# chmod 755 /usr/bin/ThisIsMyScriptName.sh


To edit the sudoer file:

Just add your script path to the end of the MythTV user section

I think the fluxbox key file is

It should be easy to edit. It's basically a list of keys and corresponding commands. Your command should be:

Hi,

You could do it from a menu choice...then switching could be done from a remote. .. Put it down a couple layers so you can save it behind the pin gate so the kids don't mess with your head :)

I put those scripts in the /usr/bin/ and to keep them seperate use a common prefix for them. run- sw- ch- so any future additions would be grouped together when looking for them down the road.

Thanks for all the help, but I have run into a couple of problems.
1) My scripts would only copy the xorg.conf files when I ran them as root
2) My lcdswitch.sh script doesn't reactivate my lcd display.

I might need to add a bit of background....
I was running myth with just my 22" LCD from the VGA of my video card. I added a projector off the DVI, and the video only works on the projector. I unplugged the projector, rebooted and video worked on the LCD again, so I saved the xorg.conf as xorg.conf.lcd, I plugged the projector back in and video worked on the projector, so I saved that xorg.conf as xorg.conf.projector. I thought I could just set up this switch between the two. When I try the lcdswitch.sh script as root with the projector plugged in, it switches the xorg.conf files, but doesn't enable video on the LCD.

The best solution would just have the video work on both all the time, but have so far been unsuccessful. Alternatively, which config file is changing.

Thanks for the input, I have been working on this problem off and on for a long time.
