Hi,

I'm just not sure if my experience with Knoppmyth would be classified as Tier 1 or Tier 2. I have just installed Knoppmyth R5F27 fresh.

So, lets see. I have an ASUS A7V motherboard which has 2 seperate IDE/PATA controllers, both on-board. The second one is a Promise board which I normally have my hard drives hooked up to, however, they go from hde-hdg. So, my first issue was the auto-install, which was easily fixed by putting a hard drive on hda, took me a while to find that out, though.

Second thing I tackled was my wireless. It seemed as though my wireless hardware was detected, but I couldn't connect to my wireless network. I use WPA and I almost got to the point of disabling my wireless security to make sure the hardware/software wasn't a problem when I figured out that I needed to use wpa_passphrase to make it work. Now it works like a charm.

Third, I pre-read an issue with R5F27 and ATI Remote Wonder, so I did the fix without even checking to see if my remote worked or not. Well, the fix worked, however my volume/mute buttons wouldn't work. I was able to get them to work, using xmodmap. I had to use xev to find out what keycodes the buttons on my remote used (and also to find out what the [ ] and | keys were named for xmodmap) and using the wiki to modify my KnoppMyth-run file, I got them to work! :)

Some things that I didn't have to configure:

My Nvidia 6200 video card... Not sure why and this is freaking me out. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything and it *just works*. I was using Ubuntu/Mythbuntu before and even with Mythbuntu 8.04 I had to mess with Nvidia drivers. Basically because the drivers the Restricted Drivers Manager installed would cause mythfronted/mythtv-setup to not work (just go "poof", couldn't figure it out). Meh

My Hauppauge 150 card (of course).

Um, ya, so as I said I was using Mythbuntu. Before that I was using Ubuntu 6.10 with mythtv apt-get'd into it. Unfortunately 6.10 isn't supported, so I was just barely lucky to get the Schedules Direct Mythtv update onto it. However, eventually it broke and I couldn't upgrade Ubuntu, so I decided to fresh to 8.04. OMG nightmare. Sure, stuff would work, but not well. Wireless, Network Manager got it to connect, but it would just randomly drop the connection. Of course the nvidia drivers, ugh. Then, for some reason, my database would need reparing (even though I was using the same hardware fine with 6.10 for months). I don't know what happened there, but eventually it just died and it took me a day of running commands to repair it. Then mythfrontend just wouldn't work. I think it was all when I did the updates from the update-manager, eventually things just didn't work.

Well, enough of my griping. I know I've used Knoppmyth before. I had a post here about an IBM netvista machine which just didn't like Linux (WinXP runs fine on it). So, I used another computer. I'm not sure why I switched from Knoppmyth. But, I'm back now and I really like it. Can't wait for the next release, since I got a taste of Myth 0.21. I'm pretty sure I should be able to do the auto-upgrade since I used auto-install. Hopefully that will work fine without problems.

Ok, thanks for reading. Um, so, ya, tier 1 or tier 2? :D

Duey

Hi, duey.

Good post...and welcome back!

Sounds like a Tier 1 install to me.
