My physical backend also has a firewire connection to a Motorola DCT-6200 -- need to see if those firewire ports make it through to the guest OS and provide sufficient performance. I suspect they will.

Firewire? Ouch, deal killer I'm afraid, I don't know of any VM solution that passes through firewire but I am no expert, maybe there is one but I have a sinking feeling.....

ah yes. I use Firewire to change channels on my STB but the media is delivered via USB on an HD-PVR. The way I did the firewire was to have my firewire run on my host OS and then have the myth channel change script call my firewire script remotely using ssh from the guest MBE.

If you need to stream over firewire then you can also install a slave backend on the host to do just that and have it connect to the virtualized MBE. I used to do this back when I had a PVR-500. Obviously going to the HD-PVR simplified things.
