Basically, I have alsa setup and working just fine with mplayer. If I try to use the internal mythtv player, I get no sound and my /var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log ballooned to >5 megs. The bulk of it being:

Code:
2009-12-11 15:43:31.278 Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp2), the error was: No such file or directory
/dev/dsp2: No such file or directory
2009-12-11 15:43:31.278 Error opening audio device (/dev/dsp2), the error was: No such file or directory
/dev/dsp2: No such file or directory

Is there a setting I need to tweak to get this working properly or is it a bug w/ the alsa package in the repo? I ask because this is true on two different PCs now that I'm running R6. Under R5.5, alsa works with no problems.

Those errors are telling you that the internal player is trying to open /dev/dsp2 instead of the device alsa has created (probably /dev/dsp).

Fix it in MythTV Configuration->General, and change to the appropriate mixer device at the same time (/dev/mixer for /dev/dsp, mixer0 for dsp0, etc)

Recorded video sound playback very weak: I have set the gain to maximum in the player and the Bose system. Sometimes dialogue is barely audible. Other times, torrented videos have reasonable volume.

When 6.02 is installed, is the default ALSA or OSS?

What kind Bose system is it, 5.1 or 2 channel or is it some sort of "magical" virtual-surround sound system. It sounds like you are missing the center channel check that you have the system set up correctly. 2 ch for a stereo system 5.1 for a surround system. you could also try some different recordings like a rerun of an older sitcom that would be in stereo vs CSI which is in surround. In the recordings menu my theme has icons under the screenshot to show if the recording is in stereo or surround.

If recordings are weak but everything else is fine, you may want to check the volume level in your recording profile.

Service menu->Mythtv-config->Setup->TV Settings->Recording profiles-> Mpeg2 Encoders->(choose your profile)->page4

Assuming your still using the PVR500 listed in your sig.

The Bose Companion 3 is a two channel system and is designed for computers. It is just powerful enough for an HTPC system. I have one for the Mythbox and another for an AppleTV.

I checked the recordings by playing them on my laptop: the volume seems to be normal / reasonable. For some reason, audio from the back of the Mythbox (Gigabyte EG45M-UD2H) is significantly (but not completely) muted. For many recordings / videos, I have to max the gain on both the mythTV player and the Bose. This is true for both recordings as well as video content.

I think the problem is that the gain (volume) is too low coming out of the motherboard. If this is true, then I am not sure how to sort out if is hardware / software (configuration) issue. Suggestions / questions are appreciated.

Have you run alsamixer in an xterm and adjusted your volume levels?

yes alsamixer and like I said above make sure you are running in stereo 2ch mode on MythTV that board does support surround sound and If you weren't getting the center channel you would be loosing most of the dialog.
