Hi,
I chose to install KM to the hard drive. When I run mtd I get the listing from the DVD player. But when I choose to play dvd from the frontend, nothing happens despite following the "examples".
Here are some things I observed while troubleshooting all this:
1) much of the filesystem is RO (why?)
2) during the install, numerous /myth/ directories weren't created (saw failure notices flash by)
3) after running .sh in examples I saw no evidence of failure but I haven't seen any success either
4) all your base are belong to us
5) the frontend fails to connect to the backend via 127.0.0.1
I want to congratulate everyone on somethng with great potential, particularly what can be done with this in light of the future wave of WiFiMAX and the proliferation of wireless. Soon enough, this'll become a telephone-ish interface, peer2peer pirate telvision and so on.
I look forward at becoming good at helping people learn to use this system.

heh, boy do I feel clueless.
I examined the contents of the example, and understood, finally, the concept of source/destination. So I guess my helpful clue to those who proceed after me is, "seek ye the destination".

from what you've observed, error messages/lack of backend, I'd worry that the install didn't go to plan.
Is anything else working?
i.e. watching tv/recording
The install normally doesn't give any errors about not being able to create directories when I run it.
Is the harddrive very small or has it been partitioned in an odd way previously?

I removed a couple spurious pieces of hardware and swapped out the tv tuner. I did the .sh and dpkg -i the appropriate tasty bit. Went through the set up. Bounced the box. No DVD love. I wonder what I am doing wrong. Log files don't tell me anything. I confirmed that the requisite directories had been made.
Other than the install and running the setup program, are there other manual things I should do?

KnoppMyth doesn't play encrypted DVDs.

I understand. Does MythTV play unencrypted DVDs from a DVD drive or exclusively from the hard drive?
Thanks

Myth plays neither. It is MPlayer that plays the DVDs. You'd have to do some extra configuration for it plays DVD images on the hard drive.
