Hi all.

After having no luck with HOURS and HOURS of reading trying to get s/pdif (SPDIF) (onboard) working with my a7n266-vm, I have it working with my "production" mythtv box which is an amd760 based k7-master, 512 ram.

Here is how to get the mp3+ working for "videos" (ripped dvds):

1) plug it in. USB cable -> usb port, and other end to mp3 +.

After you do that, check dmesg:

hub.c: new USB device 00:07.3-2, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x41e/0x3010) is not claimed by any active driver.
usb.c: registered new driver snd-usb-audio
usb.c: registered new driver hiddev
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 2, frame# 440
usb.c: registered new driver hid
input0: USB HID v1.00 Pointer [041e:3010] on usb2:2.3
hid-core.c: v1.8.1 Andreas Gal, Vojtech Pavlik <vojtech@suse.cz>
hid-core.c: USB HID support drivers
usb.c: registered new driver audio
audio.c: v1.0.0:USB Audio Class driver

2) cd /proc/asound and do "more devices"
root@mythtv:/proc/asound # more devices
0: [0- 0]: ctl
8: [0- 0]: raw midi
16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback
24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture
33: : timer
32: [1- 0]: ctl
48: [1- 0]: digital audio playback
56: [1- 0]: digital audio capture

3) the 0-0 is my onboard sound. The 1-0 is my USB mp3+. You also can see this here:
root@mythtv:/proc/asound # more cards
0 [rev50 ]: VIA686A - VIA 82C686A/B rev50
VIA 82C686A/B rev50 at 0xe000, irq 5
1 [Audio ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio
USB Audio at usb-00:07.3-2

4) go into the setup menu -> video settings -> player settings and add a -ao string

Mine looks like this:
-ao alsa9:hw:1,0

Notice, yours might be "0,0" if it was your only soundcard.

Hope this helps!

Rob

Rob,

Ive been looking into a new sound card, and this mp3+ USB device looks interesting. I was wondering, I understand that your using the s/pdif output, does the s/pdif input work as well? I have digital audio output from my cable box, so using S-Video along with digital audio thru the s/pdif input on the hub would be awesome. Thanks for the info.

SigTom>

I have analog cable, and don't really have anything with S/PDIF input to try it out with, sorry :(.

If you do get one and get it working, post here!

Rob

I'm having less luck with the MP3+. I plugged it in and it appears to be recognized, or at least messages about a USB audio device show up in dmesg. But it doesn't show up when I do "more devices" or "more cards" under /proc/asound.

What's my next step? Thank you.

PS: just tried recompiling alsa with "--with-cards=usb-audio" and it doesn't seem to have helped.

OK, in my flailing around and attempting to get the USB-based box to work with my master backend, I screwed something up but good. Live TV would no longer display on the backend or the frontend, and recordings were 0 bytes long. Not good when Lost is coming on in 30 minutes.

I recorded Lost on VHS (ick) and did an "auto upgrade" on the master backend after backing up. The Auto Upgrade procedure is just awesome. I did have to redo a number of tweaks (XF86Config-4 file, locking down MythWeb, fixing the mythlink script) but all in all it's a tremendous timesaver.

Two problems: (1) my system will now no longer boot without a keyboard attached. I know I've seen that problem described here and will look at those threads.

(2) now, when I cd /proc/asound and type "more devices" and "more cards" on the auto-upgraded machine, I get the following:

Code:
mythtv@mythtv:/proc/asound $ more devices
 33:       : timer
mythtv@mythtv:/proc/asound $ more cards
--- no soundcards ---

I am getting sound, though (via the Nforce2 onboard audio). What's going on here?
