I've got my PVR250 up and running with the remote working, but I've noticed that the range of the remote is only about 4 or 5 feet, which definitely doesn't work in my living room. Is this normal for that remote? What are my alternatives? Is the connector for the IR receiver a standard type where I could get an extension for it? I'd like to get things working with this remote, as I'm trying to keep from having to spend more money on this project, and I foresee myself having lots of problems trying to figure out lirc.

are you sure the batteries are good. I get a good 10-15' out of mine at least, but I did start having problems with it and I swapped out the batteries and all went back to normal.

Nope, batteries are good, they're new. I also switched them with a rechargable set from my digital camera that were freshly charged just to be sure...same result. However, I flipped the receiver over so the non-smooth side showed, and that got me about another 3 feet. I'm literally about 2 feet short of being very happy now.

Does anyone know about the possibility of using an extension cable for the receiver?

I'm still using the original batteries after about 6 months. I just tested and basically ran out of house before I ran ot of range. We're talking somewhere beyond 25' although I didn't bother to get the tape measure out to get the real distance. I was shooting from the far end of the kitchen, through the dining room, and all the way across the living room.

1) Make sure the sensor eye side is facing towards the room/remote.

2) Point the remote towards the sensor. This is IR, so line of sight helps.

I've found that, though I have plenty of distance, the angle has to be almost exactly straight-on. If I'm 30 degrees to the side (where my la-z-boy is), it have a real hard time getting it to register, so I have to hold the remote out, towards the couch, to get it to register.
