2) Tried an install on an old Dell Inspiron 560 (Core2duo, 8G RAM, SSD, PCI tuner card).
Install was very nice.
When prompted, setup as Master Backend.
It downloads some packages (incl MythWeb),
but after the prompted reboot, no MySQL, no mythbackend?

(in fact, no myth binaries at all! Just myth2mkv, myth2mp3 myth2videos)

I am traveling so I cannot look at my R9 install. I do remember an issue with an unexpected download after install (several linux things reported as needed to be updated) and after the update was complete the system no longer worked (similar to your reports). I reinstalled from scratch (did that many times at first R9 install to figure things out). Now in full disclosure, I did a full install this time, not a backend only. I did not allow any updates and all is working fine ( well samba did not work but you can search my other posts for a fix).

I don’t understand how you did “full install”.
There are three choices, Backend, Frontend and desktop.
