Hi all:

Well, after sending private messages to a few of you, I'm even more confused than when I started. I have an Asus A7N8X-VM/400 I was planning on using for a Myth box (same as the A7N8X-VM but with 400FSB). I bought an AGP/NV/DVI daughtercard to go along with it. I was just about to put the AGP daughtercard into the motherboard and give it a try when I came across one guy's story on Usernet news. He said that he tried to use this same combination of card and motherboard and he burnt out the card and his television.

So I contact the distributor from whom I bought the motherboard and card. They speak to Asus, who tell them that the card is not supposed to work with this board, only with the A7N-266 series. So I contact a couple of you on the forum here, and one person says he has been successfully using the AGP daughtercard for a year with no problems. Now I'm really confused. I don't want to try anything that could potentially fry my motherboard and daughtercard (not to mention TV).

Has anyone else used this combination of motherboard and AGP/NV/DVI caughtercard? What were your results? Are the rest of you who have this board using the AV/S bracket with just SVideo and composite out?

I looked at the ASUS web site and that AGP card is listed as supported for the A7N8X-VM. They don't specifically call out the "400" variant but that is a minor tweak from the base model. A couple of comments:

It IS possible to burn out a TV with incorrect settings of the X environment. Read the wiki and all messages about "modelines" before making the connection to your set.

It's not clear to me what the daughtercard is doing. I'm not sure if it is just a DVI adapter for the internal graphics processor, or if it is a separate graphics chip i.e. a separate graphics card.

You may be better served by just getting an AGP graphics card with DVI out and using that. You can pick up nVidia GeForce 5200 cards pretty cheap these days.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I had thought of the refresh rate possibility or the modelines possibility, but that doesn't usually involve sparks coming out of your daughtercard/motherboard, which is what the party in question says he experienced. After all the fuss, Asus reps still claim that card is NOT intended to work with the A7N8X-VM/400, but I suspect it is just not intended to work with the Composite out and SVideo ports on that board (or any board-that's what the AV/S is for.) Either way, I just switched to an Abit NF7-S v 2.0 and I'll see how it goes with that.
