hi,
I have been trying for the last two days to
1. recompile the kernel on a fresh R4V5 install of KnoppMyth to 2.6.8.1 (the wiki did not work as planned!)
2a. get a master backend (kernel-2.6.8.1) to talk with a fresh R4V5 install of KnoppMyth.
2b. get both my ATI TV Wonder VE and pvr-350 cards to work on the one backend

I did eventually recompile the kernel and my backend IS technically running 2.6.8.1... but it lacks support all over, or in other words, I'm so newbish at compiling a kernel, I had NO idea what to build in, have loaded with a module, or just leave out... but it IS running. The two knoppmyth installs do talk... kinda, but there are backend crashes and general freezes on the master backend... and the reason for the crashing seems to be the pvr-350 or more specifically the ivtv drivers... lastly though, the pvr-350 is a real stick in the mud when it comes to getting it working in any way. I have updated the drivers numerous times trying any sort of combination and it works only partially.

My question is...
1. is there good reason to upgrade to kernel 2.6.8.1 or well, any variant of 2.6?
2. how do I set the tuner type in the new ivtv drivers???!!! I have tried modifying /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv so that options type=44 (<-this number has changed so many times, no real change) is there one clear way to change it?? I've searched so many posts, most of them seem to conflict.

I hope someone takes pity on me in this time of desperation.... thanks in advance.

I am the Author of the 2.6.8.1 HowTo. Sorry it didn't work for you. I did get the Kernel configuration file from an FC2 install, so it may be that some of the kernel configuration options I got for free actually help things quite a bit.

I don't think that there is any good reason for using a 2.6 kernel if you dont need it (and with the number of people with PVRx50/bttv cards working in this forum not having upgraded the kernel, that is the definite path of least resistance). I needed it because the driver for my card (DVICO FusionHDTV) only compiles cleanly agains a 2.6.8.1+ kernel.

Kernel options work a bit differently in 2.6 kernels, so much of the advice on this forum will not help you if you have unnecessarily upgraded to 2.6

The only reason I know of at this point to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel is for some dvb cards. This does not affect either of the cards you have. You may need to download and compile a newer version of ivtv, but should not need to use a newer kernel.

I know it must have been a problem with the config... other then that the wiki was great =)... so just something to think about...

ahh... ok, well, at least I've got a little more experience compiling kernels  I'll just do a fresh install... thanks for your help.
