if you are getting a glx error it is very likely that you have either not installed or not installed correctly the nvidia drivers. I would try installing them again.

I use the script installer and it said it installed fine. What does GLX do anyway? I saw from some threads that this was a common problem and I should do an apt-update apt-get install nvidia-glx
Should I not do that? Would this be causing my guide video problem (showing in the upper right hand corner instead of left)

glx is opengl acceleration and is only used for 3d, so it should not affect the playback. I knew there was an issue with one version, but it should not be an issue with the version that comes on knoppmyth.

I had some quality problems with analog cable too - though I am using software encode. In the Bay Area we have a lot of problems with RFI on low numbered stations. Noisy input is hell for just about all forms of video compression. I called my cable company about it and they sent out a tech who just replaced a couple of my coax connectors and splitters with newer higher quality ones. This cleaned up most of the stations and that made a huge difference in the quality of the encoded files. I also tweaked the encode filters a bit, but that doesn't apply to you.

the topic about the graininess has been covered before and there really is a problem, but it seems to relate to the ivtv version. There is a HUGE quality difference that some of us have experienced when moving to newer versions. I have suffered from the problem since the move from R4V4 (see this topic http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3323 about half way down I posted a link to pictures showing the difference.) I still have not resolved this, changing pci slots and cards... very frustrating that this is the one thing that makes me want to go all the way back to R4V4.

The link does not work. However I can hapily report that R5A9 has solved all my problems (though it did create a new one). With this version I was able to use my onboard lan, sound, and IDE instead of having to rely on PCI cards for each of those functions. Playback is now smooth and in sync and the video on the guide works fine. I even think the video quality on dark pictures/subjects is better, but I will have to let you know. It was a pleasure to follow the 2 sets of directions, install the software and have everything work! :D

Congrats you lucky dog!

Beware the 2 edged WAF sword! I dare not screw with my working R4V5 system because if I take a chance and hose the system and lose all my wife & kids show, I'll be sleeping outside for a while.

I am going to wait until June when its warm out before upgrading!

:-)

Thanks!

Andrew Lynch

PS, I am joking....

Ahhh but that's the difference between us. I was not able to get R4V5 working on my hardware. Thinking back on it, I wonder if the problem was not the PCI bus. There I was trying to pass MPEG2 Video over it and at the same time HD DMA transfers. I bet the PCI bus was bogging down causing my other problems. If that was the case, then other people should be warned not to attempt to use a PCI EIDE card since the bus won't be able to support all the data going across it.
