If the mtd thread is started as root it behaves much better. Medium quality rips appear to work fine. The permissions in /myth/tmp and /myth/video look good but it may be using something else for intermediate files.

Since R5A9 is ALPHA software should not that be reserved for those with experimental, developmental, or likely soon to be rebuilt systems like first time builders? Its ALPHA software, not even ready for BETA yet.

Those of us with R4 based system (well, me at least) have built up some WAF and am anxious not to jeopardize that with ALPHA software. R4V5 is probably as close to "STABLE" as these things come, I'd guess. I know its up to the developers but I'd appreciate a stable line based on R4V5 and a developmental line based on R5.

Still, I appreciate there is only so much time to devote to these things so you got to choose but I am not risking my working system until I've seen R5 get some track record on auto updating working systems. 0.17 debs would be nice but if its a deal breaker then I can live without them.

I auto upgraded my master backend to R5. I would not have released it if I didn't think it was ready. It is alpha because it doesn't have all of what we'd like to include in R5. Yes, it has a few bugs, but nothing that should prevent you from getting it working in short order. I've been running R5 for months and it has been very stable.

I guess I'll just sit tight for a while and let R5 alpha shake itself out on the forums. Eventually, either the temptation of R5 will just get to be too much and I'll take the leap or I'll screw something up and have to start over with R5.

My system is not Tier 1 and that is what really worries me. I have LVM (and the LVM auto upgrade instructions printed out) and the weird old/new PVR-250 mix which requires special ivtv compile and config (I printed out the modified /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv). My mb is a cheapie but is still Tier 1 (uses all Intel parts celeron + 845GV) and I use a NVidia GF MX440 PCI video card. The CD/HDs have never caused any grief.

Deciding whether to upgrade was easier before everyone in the house used the HTPC and stored all their favorite shows on it! Then if it went up in smoke no one noticed! I can put off the upgrade off until its warm outside!

I would love to see debs for r4v5 . I've finally gotten my box just like I want it. There are a few things I've added (icecast streaming, daily internet radio recordings) that I would hate to break by forgetting to copy a config file, forgetting the name of a program, etc ...

I guess I am content with my .16 set up now and don't see any major benefits jumping to .17 or r5, but wouldn't mind having the functionality of .17 if it were released as debs for r4v5 .

While I've downloaded the ISO, based on other comments I've read about issues with PVR-350's, I'm going to wait... the wife is starting to be happy with the Myth box... but still is hooked on Tivo...

So for now I've voted for Upgrade Deb's please.

I'd love to test, but the box has become more production than that at this point...

So I'm in a unique position. I have a lot to gain from upgrading and I have a lot to loose from upgrading.

PROS: I have lots of recoverable frontend lockups (most likely related to the PVR-350) that might be fixed in 0.17. I only recently got the WAF to an acceptable level so not a whole lot of recordings, etc. to worry about. I recently purchased a 2nd matched HD that I use to store music and videos so I could in theory do a clean install with it without touching the original drive.

CONS: It took me 6 months to get the PVR-350 working the first time: I couldn't possibly start over with R4V5 and expect to get to a working state within an acceptable amount of time if I bugger up my current setup. I recently turned off the tivo service.

THE PLAN: I'm going to do a dd from my original drive to my new drive and try to upgrade. If that doesn't work right away I'll try a fresh install on my 2nd HD. If that doesn't work right away I'm going to re-dd and try to compile and install 0.17 (yeah right). After that I'm going to give up.

Of course, I couldn't say what drivers go with what hardware, or whether it works, or whether there are any other drivers compiled into the kernel, or any modules in other places, but that's what's there out of the box in /lib/modules/.../net/wireless and .../media/dvb

Well as a couple of people said, I will not pleased to have to reinstall my mythbox. It's very stable right now, and It tooks long time to achieve it .

And as I'm using the knoppmyth installation as base installation for my applications, files and medias server, I'll have to spend 2-3 complete days to rebuilding it and retesting, the WAF factor is very important for me.

I've reach the phase I of my deploiment, which is one backend-frontend machine, connected on the television
The phase 2 will be remote wifi frontend, with an lcd (instead of a tv) screen wallmonted on the other rooms of the house.

I understand too that is quite difficult to maintain both version of the debs.

Anyway, in case of you guys decide not to build the deb 0.17 for R4 based installation, could you please give us support to help us to do it by ourselves ?


What is the main problem with the dependencies ?

Could I just compile and install the source for each add-on ?

there's a thread somewhere about how to compile cvs. that was started just before 0.17 came out and should be pretty much what has to be done.
