On a fresh install of R5A12, I cannot play a DVD. Anybody esle with this?

I have made no customizations, and the DVD in the drive is unencrypted.

I get the following error when running this command from the prompt:

Command: mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/dvd f -zoom -vo xv

The error is: livdvdread: Could not open input: No such device or address.

When I built it, I took the default packages (skip: i586).

Any suggestions?

Do these commands and post the output:
Code:
ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/scd0 /dev/hdc
grep mythtv /etc/group
grep mythtv /etc/passwd

BTW - a quick search should have found this recent thread - http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3882

Yeah, I saw that posting and tried it. I have a post on there also. It did not seem to work for me. Mine is broke right from the get-go.

I've since gone back to R4V5 since this will get my system back for now until I can revisit this.

Thanks anyway.

is your /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd link to /dev/scd0? i think you have to link it to /dev/hdxxx where xxx is your DVD drive. i.e. mine is /dev/hdb. After i did that, everything worked. also knoppmythwiki has a write up if you search for DVD.

SnapperD - I don't see a new post on that thread and you didn't answer the questions. This after you post complaining about RTFM and PASOTF posts over here? http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3915 How in the world do you expect to get specific advice if you don't answer specific questions? I'd have been glad to walk you through the diagnostics to determine if you had a permssions problem, a bad link, a missing library, or some other issue, but ...

Finally figured it out after reading another post that gave me an idea.

My optical device is the slave on ide channel 0, making it hdb, not hdc, which is linked to automatically (and incorrectly in my case by R5A12).

If anyone else runs into this, just do this (this example assumes your DVD is on IDE 0, slave, change to reflect where yours really is):

rm /dev/dvd
ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/dvd
chmod +r /dev/hdb

(I now see the post a few above by Grooby with the exact issue...thanks).

I happened to read this post http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3966 which gave me the idea. Happened before I came back to this thread, which would have also lead me down the proper path.

(tjc - I thought I replied that I tried but it didn't work. I had abandoned this for awhile anyway as I was working on a PVR-350 out script for the last week. Now that I re-read your post, I see where you mentiond make sure hdc is your DVD drive. I guess it didn't hit me when I first read this. Thanks.)

Thanks to all who posted. I can now go with R5A12 and the wife won't kikc my butt for stuff not working.
