when I strip everything out of the mplayer command except...

mplayer dvd:// -fs -zoom

it works. and plays fine.

However, the same stripping action ( -dvd-device %d -vo and -xv) don't seem to make the ripper work.... it acts like it's working and then dumps about 3/4ths the way through.... @#%*! :x It also says something to the effect of one of the commands being depreciated and being replaced by just "N' as in 'dvd://N'.. anyway, more food for thought....

 Post subject: a semi final fix

So, the fix to restore dvd playback seemed to be to blow the frontend away completely and reinstall with 5A15.1. Now it at least plays things back (can't rip though, but I havn't had a chance to look into that yet). Neither pretty nor gracefull but there you go :).
