I'm currently running a master backend with a tuner card and a frontend/slave backend with no tuner card in it.

As the frontend/slave is a 3Ghz P4.. about twice the speed of the backend, I would like to get all the transcoding and commercial flagging done by the slave.

Problem is the slave doesn't seem to have the same recording profile options available as master backend.

I'm assuming this is becuase there is no tuner in the frontend?

Has anyone else out there achieved what I am trying to do?

P.S. I don't want to put the tuner in the frontend as:

a) It is a Shuttle box and the card requires mods to the backing plate to sit in the PCI slot correctly.

b) If I take the frontend to LAN parties (for example) I still want to be able to record TV.

Thanks,
TS.

A slave backend cannot be a slave backend w/o a tuner card.

Right.. I assumed you had to have a backend process of some sort running before a machine would run the transcoding or commercial flagging.

So does that mean there is no way of running these things on my frontend without having a tuner card?

I don't know. MythTV has a myriad of functions, I don't know them all. I'd suggest search the MythTV archives...

It was just a suggestion... I didn't state nor was I trying to state you didn't.

Did you find a way to keep the slave backend from running transcode jobs? Mine will commercial flag just fine but transcoding always fails when it runs on the slave.

I don't think there is a way (at this point) to change this behaviour. I saw a post (on the mailing lists?) that said that this may be changed in the future - but right now you can only allow or disallow both kinds of jobs.

It's too bad, I'd like to do the same thing.

So here is an idea -- it's a rather round-about way of getting there, but I suspect one could get it to work:

First, we need to figure out exactly what myth does when a transcode job is executed. I can think of 2 approaches:

1. Run "ps -auxw" while a transocde job is running and capture the job with all it's command line options.

2. Browse the source code to find out exactly what it executes.

Next, create a shell script that will execute this job on a remote machine via "ssh". Finally, instead of configuring mythtv to transcode the recording, configure it to execute your shell script. Of course, you'll need to NFS mount "/myth/tv" on your front-end machine.

RobTheGob, Is the allow/disallow jobs in the setup? On the master or slave? It isn't what I was looking for but at least I will be able to have my slave running without failing half my transcode jobs.

Marc.aronson, I don't know enough about anything to do anything with the source...yet. I'm learning a lot from this project.
Best case would be to figure out how to fix the problem instead of work around it but I'm not up to that yet.
Anyone know if this is fixed, better or different in R5F1?

Thanks for the replies!
