Greetings,

I am running a Chaintech 7NIF2 and a WinTV-PVR-250, with the audio attempting to run out of the motherboard. I initially tried to update to 15.1 from 12 (via a fresh install) and ran into the problem of no audio. I tried running alsaconf to no avail. I checked my bios and the audio is set to auto. I ripped a cd (thinking it was something with the tv tuner) and couldn't get any sound from that either.

I thought maybe I should reinstall r5a12 and that would solve the problem (it didn't). So I went back to trusty r4v5 thinking that will generate some sound, but it didn't either.

So I am now with a silent freshly installed r5a15.1, that I setup for tv via /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample and audio configuration via alsaconf. I have my Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> 3rd page setup as follows:

- Audio output device is /dev/dsp
- Use internal volume controls is checked
- Mixer device is "/dev/mixer"
- Mixer control is "PCM"
- Master Mixer Volume set at 100
- PCM Mixer Volume set at 100

I have researched this throughout the forum and wiki and I am frustrated and at a complete loss. Could it be that something is muted? Can anyone offer me a potential solution?

I look forward to any help that is out there,

Michael

jbman,

My wife and I just went into alsamixer before I checked to see if anyone had replied to this post.

Master says:

Card: NVidia Nforce2
Chip: C-Media Electronics CM19761
View: Playback
Item: Master

above <Master> is 00

Card: NVidia Nforce2
Chip: C-Media Electronics CM19761
View: Playback
Item: PCM

above <PCM> againn is the green box with 00

Could this be my probem? Do I need to give you any other information for you to help me?

Michael

well yes 00 basically = mute so no you wouldn't get any sound. your sound will be controlled by master and pcm, so you are looking at exactly the right two options. try highlighting them and hitting the up arrow.

Xsecrets,

I think that I might have mistyped when I said "00." The "00" are in the same place as the MM (in the green box) not directly above the words "Master" and "PCM". I initially did try to use the up arrow but there is no tricolored bar to go up above the green box with the 00. The only ones that I notice that can go up and down the tricolored bar have the absolute value (in yellow) directly above the word i.e. "CD." Is that clear at all? Keep firing these potential solutions guys, I really really appreciate the help.

Update and more questions:

I tried looking through the following logs:

cat /var/log/messages
cat /var/log/syslog

I couldn't find any reference to ALSA in either log. I redid alsaconf again. My questions are as follows:

1. Should I put my audiogy card (I installed without it) back into the case and re alsaconf with that one selected?

2. With everything that I have posted, does this seem like an ALSA problem?

3. If it is an ALSA problem would it manifest itself over so many installs (about 8 to 10 times)?

4. Could this be a hardware problem and if so how would I go about troubleshooting it?

Well that is all the questions I can think of for now. Today is my Sunday and I squandered it with setting up TV. I hope someone can offer a little nugget of advice that will make it worth the time I spent.

Thank you again Xsecrets and jbman for the help so far, I really appreciate it.

I'm having a lot of issues with tuner type=8 cards. ON the same versions you've tried.

What is the output of

Code:
dmesg | grep tuner

I can't get any audio either, and the cards have worked in the past.

I have an Audigy card and am having audio issues as well, so I don't believe that putting that in will fix your problem.

Sorry for the bad news.

You will see in this thread a couple of people are having audio issues:

Our of Curiosity, Girkers, what tuner do you have on your PVR?

I have audio to play CDs etc and MP3 files but not video. :(

I've also used the ivtv driver and tools directly:

Set the input to the tuner port:

ivtvctl -p 4

Stream right from the device:

mplayer /dev/video0

All I see is static, but still no audio.

I am using a Visionplus TER DVB-T and when I run alsaconf and setup the card it works fine, but after reboot it doesn't.

Thanks for the tip Girkers, but not luck. I think my issue must be different. My tuner actually isn't encoding an audio stream in to the file. If I record a file with:

cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg

And then transfer the file to my PC, I have the static visually but there is no audio, so its not the sound output on my box. I can play MP3s fine as well.

I think it must be something funny in my audio matrix, but its strange it worked in the past...

I'll put any further detail in a post about the PVR-250.

Okay I am having a similar problem with a pvr250 and chaintech nif2 MB

I just sent the mobo back because I thought it must be the mother board.

No sound when playing dvd's audio streams or in Myth

tried playing with Alsa conf searching the forums and no luck. I hope it was my M/B but I am very interested in what solution works for people.

I have found the resolution to no sound at http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4406 but this may not actually relate directly to this thread but I thought I would share it anyway.

I'm still having the problem of the green highlighted Master and PCM, but not being able to do anything to make them move. I followed Girker's :) very useful link above and none of the things there seemed to apply to me

Not
Quote:
update-rc.d alsa [or] update-rc.d alsa defaults

Got the same outputs as described in the link.

The situation isn't exactly the same, as I can't do anything to get sound....
haven't had it in R5A15.1 at all.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance.
