I have a pvr250 and chaintech 7nif2. For some reasond R5A15 & R5A15.1 ,amixer and alsamixer are different - they don't have master volume and pcm volume control. And I get no sound . I tried downloading a working copy of asound.state for the chipset, and I used alsactl restore , even though asound.state has a master volume , it still did not appear in the mixer. I used alsmixer -V all and made sure that everything was unmuted and turned up. Still no sound.

could you clarify what sound out you are trying to use? Digital out analog etc... With the upgrade from 12 to 15.1 I had a digital sound out problem too, but it was easily fixed by removing some custom setting that moved over from the auto upgrade. Things have gotten much easier, and now, have not needed manual changes. If the problem is analog, I just noticed that I have not analog either. Odd, but my alsamixer is complete and has all the correct options for my nforce2 board. Including the Analog to IEC958. Anyway, if the Digital Audio howto at the Wiki does not fix it for you, let us know what output you are trying to use.

Someone who had done a broader search recently posted a URL to a thread on the ALSA forum with details of an issue that sounds very similar... A search for posts here containing the word "alsa" within the last week should turn it up.

deleted asound.state , Downloaded the latest alsa drivers , compiled them.
And it works now. It was bug in the ALSA drivers.

I'd recommend a search of the KnoppMyth wiki http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/ for instructions on compiling the drivers which will include the required link. A search over at fresh meat http://freshmeat.net/ which would also very quickly lead you to the official ALSA website and their download area... Or even going to google, typing in "alsa" and clicking on "I'm Feel Lucky". Or....

Or finally I suppose you could just wait for the magical driver fairie to show up with his floppy disk full of goodies for all the good little users, but I've got to warn you that it will take a lot longer that way.

Ok, I deserved that I suppose...

Any reason I can't just:

apt-get remove alsa-base

apt-get install alsa-base

and be done?

PS.... for whatever reason, it didn't work.... (^*&%%&^%)

so download it to the alsa-base folder in in /var/...
then do the whole make, install business?

The usual place for compiling stuff like this is the /usr/src directory. That's where I'd do it anyway...
